Technical Blown Turbo

Technical Blown Turbo

Okay, so im no mechanic
I currently drive a 1.9 M-jet sporting (no modifications). In the last few days i have been experiencing a very worryign noise coming from my turbo, above about 2,800rpm and 2/3 throttle.
I dont really want to go down to my local fiat garage and have them check it out, as it means going through all that hassle!!
i dont have any white smoke, and power is intermittent, sometimes it will go like s**t of a shovel, other times it simply wont rev :-s

I was wondering if i am unique to this problem, or if there is a fix for it??
somehow i manage to get all but good luck with cars, and now my tendancy is to panic weneva something isnt exactly right.

Is this even a turbo problem? could it be down to bad fuel? maybe even a dodgy sensor?

I really would appreciate any advice or help, chears a bundle!!

chears matt!
looking thru at the problems some people have had, seems to be the same sort of symptoms.
im in town tomorrow so will pop into my local fiat, im sure they will figure it out :)

im just glad that from what seemed a massive problem could just be down to the EGR valve! (my mate had one go on a vauxhall astra) and thinkign about it, there are alot of similarities

again, thanks and ill let you know if that sorts the problem :)

My turbo sucked the intake pike into it after 2 days and 200 miles..., however the garage quickly replaced it and now only has to go in for stupid niggles like engine coolant leak, engine remap, water in tailgate, squeaky brakes....
wouldn't swap her for the world tho!

Whats an intake pike? Show me this fish! :p

VAG reliability is very overrated imo

well i would tend to agree with you there, untill last weekend. out with my pal in his mk4 golf diesel, chipped, dump valve etc, he was giving it real large around an industrial estate, untill he was going sideways around a corner and bang. i thought he had blagged a tyre of a rim at first, untill looked behind us, smoke like a californian bush fire, no power, popping and farting all over the place...... ****e the turbos blown fella i will lay money on it. anyhow limps back to my gaffe covering half the city in smog, has a chat to a pal whos into vws, turns out the intercooler pipe was blown off while ragging it. so half hour later a bit o hose the car is good as new again. now i reckon 99% of people would have bet on a shagged turbo we still cant believe it, they must be bomb proof. and to add to the surprise of that day, i lived through his driving to tell the tale........:bang:

Well the good news is the turbo's on our GP 1.9 sporting are far to small for the engine, to get the performance out of them they have size the turbo to be small to get it to spool up faster.
The Build quality of the turbo is cheap; they are fitted with a signal bronze bush bearing, no water cooling etc.. the actual turbo shaft is 8mm stepping down to 5mm at the comp wheel, it is a Vero vane turbo so it doesn’t run a waste gate as such but relay’s on the vanes to speed & slow down the turbo, the control of the actual speed of the turbo is controlled with the ECU via a vacuum bead off controller TPS & engine speed.

If you drive your car hard & pull fast gear changes you will see the Rev's flare any thing up to 1,000 rpm, this is because there is also no waste gate on the inlet tracked. By the way to help keep your turbo alive do oil canges more offten I would say every 3 mounths of 5,000 kms oil is cheaper not this bull of 15,000 kms ( the oil testing I have done with factory oil has not been good)

So team in reality if you over drive your cars with the standard turbo you will kill it end of story.

How do I know because I have broken 4 turbo’s in competition and have lernt all of this the very hard way.

That’s why I now rally my Punto Sport Abarth spec which uses a bigger turbo as I have written about before.

Best regards Phil B

Ireally dont understand why? I could go and do the same in my car and the IC pipe could pop off.
yes, the whole point of the story was to show our utter shock that the turbo / engine hadnt blown up. i reckon 9 out of 10 people would have bet on the turbo or the rings being shagged..... so thats why i have a bit more respect for the vw now. the way he was ragging the arse of it i was planning funeral songs .......

Or maybe your mate should stop driving like a complete :tosser:

I still dont see how its a VAG thing

Hi everyone. I use to know someone who worked at the Fiat garage but they left while the car was being fixed. They knew about the ECU remap and I even asked them would it be overwritten when i got the car back?

I even got asked to give the details of where I got my car remapped a few months ago. However, Im sure Fiat would not be too happy if they found this out???? I'm not sure - perhaps others can comment on this.

I would like to get the car checked over with GSR but again it is now down to cost. I just want the car to be working at its best. After a year reading the messages on the forum I decided to go with Angel Tuning and they even offered a rolling road to show me the difference before and after. The amount of smoke that came out after the re-map was shocking, chucking out all the dirt. It is a diesel and you always get some crap coming out the exhaust when you put your foot down - or am i totally wrong here. Since I got the car back a little bit of white smoke always comes out the exhaust almost every time i start the engine. I suppose I'm keeping more of an eye on the vehicle now - is this normal or should I mention something to the garage.

Anyway, that is it all now? Look forward to reading other people's views! :)

Sorry if I am sounding totally dump and stupid but i'm not a mechanic and never owned a diesel car before.

Hey I don't think you are stupid, if you don't know you don't know!;)

No my view is the remap will have little if any impact on the turbo, When a turbo goes usually it is the bearing or seal that has overheated most likely due to old age or lack of oil, even the quality of oil could be an issue. Can't recall what the manual states about running up and down of the turbo for the punto but it is very common in big trucks to not start up from cold and hit the pedal as the oil will not be at the turbo end as it is sat in the sump until a few revolutions and it is warmed up also when running hot and you stop allow the engine to idle for a few seconds again to take the heat away from the turbo through the oil.:)

When turbos fail like your one the oil will pass in to the engine and will burn so no shock there, you were lucky as you were near home it could have been worse and this is nothing to do with diesel or petrol, if it fails the engine will/can not produce the power therefore either it stops or goes very slowly!

Don't be put off by the experience enjoy the new paid for by FIAT parts until you change the car and if it fails within the next 12 months take it back for another one.

PS my one whines like a siren and has been remapped by paramount performance.
