Only had my GPS 1.9 for a month and coming from 130 BP VW passat I,m a bit dissapointed with what the fuel computer reads!! I could always guarantee 50 mpg with some spirited driving and if I drove like I'm driving this I would get nearer 60. This Fiat is only showing 40-42 at best! It does go well with no smoke.

I would like to know what other owners normally get with a bit of mixed driving.

Cheers

Up to my first service this week I was getting 55 on av with mostly M-Way but not fast driving. Since the service 42-44 (n)

Slightly above the speed limit!!! I would get 38-42 on my 37 mile trip

How new is it. Mine took around 4000 miles to really start getting good mpg, went from about 38 to 46 mpg avg.

Yeah mine's done about 23K miles and average is about 46-48 with normal to fast A road commuting... best overtaking car I've had though :)

I drove down to Swansea from Leeds for the first time in it last week and got 56mpg averaging 75-80mph. Very impressed, general driving seems to be equally impressive, im not a particuarly fast or heavy footed driver though, but it great to have the power there when its needed (y)

Now travelled 12,000 miles over two years, always averaged 38'ish MPG on the computer. Not very good. My 15 year old Pug 306 never gets below 50 MPG with same style of driving. Fiat obviously more fun to drive and much more torque. Tend to use my Pug for work and Fiat for play.

Urrr... Edit: 23.5k and average MPG is 51, sorry I was going off rubbish memory, so I checked on the way home. Well at least it's good news. Oh I forgot to say that my daily journey also includes between 10 and 20 mins in heavy, hardly moving town traffic at rush hours!

Are you seriously saying that you get 51 MPG sitting in traffic jam. My commute is 52 miles round trip, I never have to stop once on the journey, I get 38 MPG.

I do mainly very short 5-6 mile journeys to and from work hardly warms the engine and average around 43mpg, which is ok, especially as I like to drive at a speed that commands my attention..but not race of course eh T? ;)

Hi all, many thanks for the info. Seems a bit of an issue here with a definite split decision. Bottom line is mine is a 56 plate on 5050 miles when I bought it and have done about 1200 miles so far. If I reset the trip it has shown 58 mpg but then goes down hill from there until it settles at around the 42 mpg mark. My commute is about 15 miles so engine gets warm after about 3 miles ish!! Then it is straight A road no gear changes until last mile and as I am comparing direct to the Vdub it is well off the pace. Went up to Brum yesterday in a Ford cmax diesel and gave it some....and got 45 mpg....bl**dy marvellous! Not.

Tyre pressures are fine. It has had its service ant about 4k, nothing appears wrong, no smoke. As one of you said it is definitely more fun the the passat but that did go as quick although the power delivery was less smooth than the GPS, it tried to rip the tyres off the rim if you floored it!! Never mind I intend to take this to the dealer who has already said " you should get around 40 mpg", I'm sorry but my sons old W red 1.2 16v sporting gets 41 mpg when driven carefully and when not it gets around 36-38!! nuff said. I also intend to get it remapped at redline after Fiat have plugged it in and told me its fine!! I'll let you know if it improves with fettling or a few more miles.

Thanks again

Dukeman. I get between 44-45mpg - & I don't hang around... However, I rarely use 6th gear unless I am cruising on dual carriageway or motorway - & certainly never under about 65mph. IMHO 6th gear on the GPS is an "overdrive". I've found that fuel consumtion plummets if I accelerate in 6th - so I always change down one or two gears. I drive with the Trip A computer always on "Inst Consumption" - as I am sure most here do. Try it. Driving a diesel engined car for economy is totally different to petrol. Most of the time you need to be in a lower gear than you would in a petrol car.

In my experience, the GPS 130 is most economical (& fun) if you can keep the revs just above 2000;). I'll prepare to get flamed:).

I have an 06 Sporting M-jet. My commute is pretty much the same as yours, I drive at 65-75 mph and average 42-43 mpg. If I drop to 55-65 mph I average 47-49 mpg, if I go at 75-85mph then my consumption is 40-42mpg. I've been doing the same trip for a couple of years now (bar a few months when I was working further away) and consumption is always as described.

Let me know if you are happy with the remap. My car has done just over 30,000 miles now and I am seriously considering a remap if it is to improve consumption. Diesel prices in South Wales is fast approaching £1.20 per litre, I could do with better fuel consumption for sure!

There begs a question. How accurate is the computer? Has anyone actually completed a full tank to the brim, and again after say 500 hundred miles? This is the most accurate way of getting definitive fuel consumption figures. The computer can surely only give an approximation.

I use the fuel computer but also work out "brim to brim" actual consumption. I rarely get less than 45 mpg. I also have a switachable re-map (one button in the cabin) that will give me some 160+ bhp. I tend to drive with the re-map switched ON & incredibly I return nearly 48 mpg. It isn't Rocket Science. The re-map over-fuels the engine which results in much lower pressure of the accelerator for the same speed. The turbo also kicks in much earlier (1500 rather than 2000) meaning that 1st & 2nd gear now have some ooomph.

People, just get real. Fiat are fully capable of making these cars into "Pocket Rockets" but they won't do so if it hurts their more expensive brands (Alfa Romeo, Lancia (next year) & even Ferrari.

As an aside I also own a AR Brera (200bhp) 2.4JTDM which I have had re-mapped to 260+bhp. As standard I got 33.5mpg but I now get 36.5mpg....

I rest my case!

I did last week, on a full tank of mixed driving but mainly urban the computer said 42mpg and I worked it out at 41.2mpg. Not too bad,one week of 600mile mway driving at 60-75mph (rush hour)I got 50mpg.

Sounds good. Where did you get your remap done?
