Hi
Just curious.
I have a GP 1.4 Active sport on loan from Fiat dealer. I am disapointed in the heater. There doesn't seem to be a great amount of heat ie. it wouldn't lift your skin! Is this the norm. I have a vw polo and an old merc 190 and they have great heaters

perhaps theres something wrong with that particular car my multijets heater is too hot i can only have it on about 3/4 or its too hot.(three quarters that is)

It only goes upto 4 though.

And I think mine is like this too, takes awhile to heat up but when it does its quite hot. I have it on 2 otherwise its too hot. But yeah in some of my friends car it hits up in like 1 minute, mines takes over 5 sometimes. I think it is because they redline line it from cold whereas I keep it steady.

I do that when its proper freezing lol, red line it in second for couple of seconds and its halfway between hot and cold in bout 30 seconds lol (cant be doing much good lol) if i drive normal it takes forever to warm up.

wear a coat!

Yeah I imagine not only from a mpg point of view, but when the engine is cold and tight you run a higher risk of damaging a component especially at higher revs. My mpg doubles from cold to normal temp.

But by warming the car up quicker, you are hitting higher revs thus giving a higher chance of engine damage.

Which brings it all back to my original point of why try and warm it up quicker? If you take it steady on the revs before its warm then you are increasing the time in which you can damage the engine, but drastically decreasing the chance of any other variable occuring. If you follow....

Ah yea I follow you. Thought about that myself once, I guess its gotta be a balance. When cold I normally goto 3k-3.5k in 1st gear (I don't like 1st gear in the GP) and 2.5k ish in other gears. But if I remember correctly in my mates A6 it automatically reved the engine when its cold at idle, to 2.5k rpm I think.

Also another thing, I think its in the BMW M5 it lights up the rev counter as the engine gets warmer, gradually. So when you first start, it may only light upto 3k and then as you get warmer it will light it up all the way to 8k.

Well mines a diesel and I don't take it over 2k until its warm.

I didn't realise audis did that? I'd say it was the auto choke but thats way too high rpm for that.

So the bmw doesn't actually rev past a certain rpm when cold or just doesn't light up?

Honda vtec engines won't hit the high cam until its warmed up properly.

Just wont light up, or lights up a different colour than the backlight so you know.
