I've got a GP MJET Sporting, just over 23,000 miles since new and I've already replaced the front tyres twice! First at 14,000 miles and then at 23,000. The rear ones are still fine, plenty of life in them, just seem the front ones can barely crack 10-15,000 miles. Is that normal?

First time I replaced them I put Bridgestone Potenza, cost me £200! Now I've put Pirelli Nero Zero, cost me £210, hope they will give me more than 9,000 miles!

Any comments please?

This doesnt surprise me at all, its well known that the GP relies hevily on the handling, i had to replace my fronts after 8k miles.

When do you guys replace them - do you wait until they're completely bald, or when there's only a little thread left?

I wait until they hit the legal limit, 3mm isn't it? one of my work mates left his tyrtes on until they were slicks. I kept telling him to change them, but he insisted they were ok, until one went bang at 80mph on a dual carriageway. :tosser:

I'd be very surprised if the P zeros lasted any longer than the Bridgestones. Fitted on 911s you can get thru a back tyre in 4000 miles no problem (285/30). I think that there's a web site somewhere that lists the hardness ratings of most tyres and that will give you some comparison on the likely life of the tyre (but not its grip or other features like road noise)

Some of the more obscure Japanese makes come out quite well - maybe worthwhile looking on a Scuby site?

Any tyre lasts longer than a toyo tyre, i went through a set of them in 7,000 miles, soft as ****.

Yeah on a 1.2 :p

Only reason is because i have to gain back all the time lost down the straights in the bends.

I changed mine when they were at legal limit, which by the way is 1.6mm not 3mm.

How the hell do you guys keep yours going for soooo long??

lol oh yeah, don't know why i thought it was 3 mm, i should have known that since i only did my theory test 2 years ago. :bang:

I spoke with a tyre fitter and confirmed the following:

1. Legal limit is 1.6mm, but it is advisable to replace your tyres when they are down to 3mm.
2. My tyres had plenty of tread left, however they were dangerously worn on the inner side. The tyre fitter said that the 3mm or 1.6mm rule does not apply to that part of the tyre, they are still legal so long as the tread is still visible. Sadly, that was not the case with my car, hence I had to replace them!
3. My vehicle's allignment was optimised and it did not contribute in the tyre's uneven wear. The tyre fitter said that car manufacturers tend to design their vehicles having in mind the "bread and butter" models of the range, which in the case of the GP are the 77-95bhp vehicles, the 130bhp Sporting was optimised for handling, ride and tyre NVH, but not for tyre wear:(

I do understand the 1.9 JTD is a heavy lump, but I do not drive like a loony! I am working in the construction business and travel a lot, my daily commute now is 130 miles daily, Swansea to Haverfordwest and back, I accelerate smoothly but on 3-4 occasions I put my foot down to overtake.

I would very much appreciate if somebody advises of a tyre make for the JTD Sporting that will last longer than 9,000 miles, because those tyres are expensive and the way things are going I'll end up replacing them every 4 months!

Sometimes I miss my Mk1 1.1 punto, £96 would replace all four tyres including balance and allignment!!!

legal limit is 1.6mm

The legal limit here may be a bit different but I just did the old "match stick" test, and on my front right there's about 5mm and 3mm on the front left.

Would you suggest swapping these with the back (plenty of thread left on those)?
