General How to remove Gear knob??

My Dad's been bought an aluminium gear knob for Christmas but can't get the original one off. Can anyone please give me advice how to remove it? It's the new shape Punto and has a lift up gear change for reverse, so does that mean he won't be able to change it, will he need a special replacement knob or will the replacement he's got still work with the lift up gear change if that part of the gear knob it left?

To remove it, twist and pull up really hard, dont be shy, brute force is the key. You will need a lift up reverse gear nob otherwise it wont fit!
