Slightly ran into the back of someone couple days ago :bang: I cant have been doing more than 5mph and its done £600 damage to the other guys car (52 plate Laguna) and has caused nealry £800 of damage to my car!!

5mph and I need a new bumper, front wing realigned and a new headlight, bloody crumple zones an all that bo**ocks.

Needless to say im not happy as i've now lost my no claims and at my age that is not a good thing :p

Bugger! Was it a loss of concentration, or just couldn't stop in time?

Lack of concentration. I'd pulled up behind him at a junction, he was turning right, i was going left. He pulled forward and i was goin to sneak up his inside and he stopped again and i didnt see so i jus nudged him.

Lesson learned though

I think 5mph may be an underestimate tho TBH.

Thats just above walking speed (ok brisk walk) Its easy to underestimate how fast we are going, but rather than a crumple zone that sounds like it was made of soft fudgy cake like the Skoda in the TV Ad! I have nudged my garage door and wall at engine cranking speed (dont ask) and not a mark on the car but it broke the downpipe from the garage guttering and dented the garage door!

5mph into a stationary object can cause a lot of damage...

I bumped a concrete post at walking pace..made a right mess! Took a whole lot of P38 to repair the damage! lol

There was an article in a car magazine recently about how modern safety on cars and different bumper sizes can cause a lot of damage at low speed. They where calling for universal bumpers to reduce insurance, imagine every looking the same! Anyway they did an experiment and said that £1800 worth of damage was caused to a new suzuki swift when it hit a stationary car at 8mph!

again i am not offending you but i have the same problem with my age and have done the exact same you were probably going faster than you thought i thought i was going like 5-6 but i was going like 10-13 so its hard to tell when your not concentrating but i think £600 is cheap i got charged 1300 but was done through insurers

You might be right, i just don't see how i could have been going that fast. I'd come to a complete stop behind him and probs only had about 2 metres (max) to gain the speed, and i know for a fact i didnt floor it.

Anyhoo, its off in the body shop tomorro, and the guy their said he can also clean up my nearside after a run in with a hedge with the money the insurance are paying, which is a slight bonus

the prices garages quote to insurance companies are a joke total rip off to the insured.example 1 little forward window in my gp you know the 1 to replace and tint to the same shade as the passengers the insurance company was charged £70.as for your dilemma cant you just get the other car repaired privately and the same with your own car at a later date.after my crash not my fault may i add when my insurance was up for renewal last September they increased by what my insurance was it doubled basically they have yet to put it back to what it was before since it is at the settlement stage.
