Styling 17" wheels on a grande punto

The only thing that matters is the rolling radius of the wheel is close to original (for sake of the speedometer and ECU) then as others have mentioned the wheel offset and bolt PCD. It won't have any effect on the gearbox, bearing in mind the C510 transmission which is used on all SDE variants FIAT Suzuki, GM etc is also being used in the 500 Abarth which has virtually twice the power and torque.

Well i had a 1.3 90bhp diesel sporting from ireland as some of you know. That had 17" wheels on as standard from the factory. This is an official fiat model in ireland so it must be possible.

Anyway, just fit them and keep your old ones, if things go wrong, swap the wheels back and get it fixed under warranty.

obviously fiat techs arent as dumb as they look

they rang him and said, can you bring in the other wheels you had on the car please? and he was like  but the figured him out. so they blamed the diff/g,box problem on the wheels and refused to do it under warranty

i dout they looked at the diif and gear box and said hmmm hmmmm yes i think this had alloys on it by looks of the damage, they obviously saw the fat air intake the abarth stickers and tv's everywhere and thought :chin: he must hav put alloys on it and switched it , i meen who would do all this stuff and not put alloys on there car, so lets blame it on that.

My reenactment :D

What wheels sir? Prove it! lol

I guess with a chaved up car its obvious you had alloys on it. (no offence intended)

Yeah, but they still wouldn't have been able to prove it would they - if grandej denied it, unless they had photographic evidence, they would have had to take his word for it.

Maybe one of the Fiat techs is a member on this forum and saw the pics of his car in Members Motors. :chin:

lol quite likely.

The exact same thing happened on my punto (mk2b) sporting not long after fitting 17" wheels and upping the power. I took it into dealer with wheels and everything on and they did it under warranty. Brand new gearbox no questions asked. So I guess it depends on your dealer too. Thing is it looks like a f**king monkey fitted it due to the fact its leaking just over a year later....

lol, I'm running 17's on my Mk2 JTD and have upped the power (remap), hopefully I won't blow my gearbox. :p

the fiat garage i got my car from said i can do owt i want as long as i dont alter the car looks like bodykit chop loads of wires otherwise warranty is ok

Which dealer is that?

I'm surprised they told you not to alter the bodywork rather than mechanicals? Bigger wheels and non standard mechanical parts are going to cause more problems than a bumper.

I've done 8,500miles with 17's on in 4months.....I would say 7,000 of those miles have been done above 3,000rpm lol and still no trouble

i got 17inch pro race1.2 on mine never had any probs had then on for about 6 mouths now handle better and feels more stable but each to there own and i cant see changing the wheels blowing up gearboxs never had any probs with my other cars and how much extra can it really put on a diff all wheels go round the same lol not helping much really lol

I wouldnt worry on the JTD (especially the 1.9) as there designed for a lot more torque so will be fine.

And for the second time it does effect any car that has been designed for smaller wheels. I think I read somewhere that someone put a redtop engine in a mk2 Corsa which came out the facory with 14's he put 19" wider rims on and managed to snap a drive shaft (due to the 220% power increase from the engine transplant) while driving and as a result sent him into oncoming traffic killing him
due to one wheel getting all the drive.

Okay, here is the situation. Someone stole my 17" Fiat alloys with tyres.  Now, I'm looking around what to buy. I might just buy the same alloy set again, or if I can put my hands on the new Abarth alloys, or if anyone knows if the new Bravo alloys would fit my Grande? I'm thinking of this alloy: Fiat Bravo bicolor alloy
