Thanks (y)

There illegal unless they have a self level device. You risk getting pulled over by the fuzz and getting a ticket, invalidate the warranty on the whole of the lighting system (not good!), depending on how they install you may get condensation in your headlamps too, and you will get an error light on your dash due to the resistance change with the bulbs. There really not worth the bother IMO. Good high quality bulbs are not much worse than HID's and have none of the hassle.

my hids on my punto mk1, have passed an MOT, i have been pulled on several occasions by the police at night, and nothing was ever said about my head lights, get hids! i love mine, i currently have my old xenon bulbs in cos im selling the car, so took the hids out, and i keep thinking i havent got my head lights on! and they dont look half as cool as hids either

Well according to the Department of Transport:-

http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/drs/hidheadlamps

Department of Transport said:
In summary it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in accordance with the rules stated above.

It is illegal unless it’s a complete replacement unit with new lens glass which is 'e' marked.

The reality is technically your car shouldn't have passed its MOT and the station that passed it is liable. This is also probably half the reason you get pulled over as well as driving like a knob. Stop advising fellow ff'ers to brake the law!.

They didnt pass the MOT they were just not noticed by the inspector. If he did notice you had HIDs then he should have checked for a self leveling system and a washer system and you would have failed when he notice you have neither.

Note, an MOT certificate does not make your car road legal.

Just get bulbs mate.

Ive got Ring HID replicas. new bulb recently released by ring, they give an intense white light which is alot brighter than any bulbs ive used before. and you still get the HID look like the blue edges etc.

Apparantly people have very different views on this. I think what im going to do is buy the HID's and if i find im "blinding" other motorists i will take them out and go back to bulbs. Also when it comes to MOT time, its not hard to quickly change them over to bulbs whilst its in the garage and then switch back.

As for it being illegal and being pulled by the cops for it. Like i said before i will put them on and drive past my mates a few times and see if they are too bright, or aimed too high or whatever. If they are ok, what's the problem?

There illegal thats the problem, and there illegal for a reason.

Maybe so, but speeding is also illegal, can you honestly say you never speed. These bulbs are hardly gonna create major prblems for other road users, having a ridiculously loud exhaust will create more of a problem for people than this.

Are you taking the ****?. Hows a loud exhaust going to create more of a problem to other road users and than blinding them with incorrectly setup illegal HID lamps?.

As i said previously, if they turn out to be blinding to other users i will revert back to the original halogens. I just don't see where the major problem is with what im saying im going to do, but each to their own.

When i've done it i will let you know if i've caused a 7 car pile up de to me "blinding" someone. I mean come on, how many cars do you see o the road with wrongly aligned bulbs, i see a lot and none of them have caused me to crash, or even people leaving their beam on. Im not saying i would leave them in if they were going to cause people to be dazzled. If they are set up in a way that they are not dazzling, then what is the problem?

i've recently fiited hid to my mk2 punto and got pulled over because they weren't bright enough  atleast 3 police officers checked the lights, i was on my way to a cruise and they were pulling cars over for the slightest little thing, i also have blue led side lights and nothing was said about them

whether you swap them to pass your MOT or not they are illegal. As i said before, an mot certificate does not make your car road legal. So yes, "problem"

Anyway its a bit off topic. T-jet asked for advice so we should be giving him sensible legal advice, and that is to go for legal bulbs, either phillips or orsam upgrades, and i recommend orsam

yes there illegal, so is alot of other things in this world.

if i didnt have my hids, im 99% sure my car would have been a write off and id of possibly killed my mate, if it wasnt for my hids, i wouldnt have seen the ditch i crashed into cos my standard bulbs dont light up the road, but cos of my hids lighting up the road, i did see it and slowed my car down enough not to cause too much damage, with standard lights, i reckon id of gone down the ditch at 60mph not about 5, therefore- thank you hids :D

and also, i dont believe my hids blind anyone, i never get flashed at, and i think my head lights are not as bright as the ones on bmw x5 4x4 thing or what ever they are whch come standard.

How are the HID's Focused? the H4 has a reflector built in to direct the light sideways to the reflector doesn't it? put a replacement bulb in my Fiesta the wrong way (didn't line the 3 pins up) and you could tell it was mis aligned straight away, headlamps that take a H7 or H1 have a different focusing array so you "might" get away with them...

HID's do blind people IMO especially my HID (push) bike light :D

thanks for the advice tommy and chris (y), think i'll go for the osram bulbs, but are they a white light? as i don't want a blue light.
