Went to reverse off my drive Monday morning, the car could not select reverse gear. Tried everything restarting, foot on off clutch etc... but nothing it was like something was blocking the reverse gear. All otehr gears were ok.

Called hubby from inside for him to have a go thinking maybe i was half asleep and being stupid but nope he couldnt get it to work either.

Called westover service garage who first of all insinuated that i was a stupid female and i had to lift the gear lever thing to select reverse, I said not on this model i dont. He basically called me a liar and said i know for a fact you do. Which i replied well I must of been doing it wrong since June then as there is no lever on this car you just move it over to teh right and down. They then said well call the AA which I did, The AA man came out in 20 mins but nothing he could do.

So took it in to the garage about 10.30ish. I have called them everyday since monday and they still havent even looked at it They have booked it in for today so thats not to bad i spose. BUT how long will it take to fix??

They claim they have never ever had this problem with the grande punto, and i cant find anything by googling it.

Does anyone know what this could be?

Another new one to me! I thought all GP's had the lift-collar to select reverse... I should have looked more closeley at the other models! Maybe its a linkage issue and hopefully fixed quick, sounds like the synchro hubs stopping reverse engagement to me. All other gears are fine I guess... anyone else had this and know what may be wrong?

Yep your dead right. We have the same vehicle in our workshop "07MY" and it doesn't have the lift reverse gear collar. My "56MY" 1.2L Active does however . Strange that, I wonder if that's a gearbox specific or rolling model year change.

well just spoken to the garage again!!

they have finally got around to looking at my car, and apparently its the selector mechanism or something like that. They have order the parts but they have to come from italy which will take at least until wednesday/thursday next week, then apparently at least a day to fit the new parts and then another half a day to refit the gearbox. So i wont get my car back until the minimum next friday possible a week on monday

Does this sound right?? that sounds ages to me. Also is there no way they can get the parts here quicker?? Does noone stock these parts in the UK why do they have to come from Italy??

as you can im not a happy bunny, i hate the crappy car they have lent me, im a smoker and my temper is rising when I am driving due to not being able to smoke in the car, dure to the crappy smoking laws in company cars.

I want my lovely punto back

Maybe this is a good a time as any to give up smoking....
