Has anyone had a similar problem to this?

Ive got an '07 Grande Punto and after doing a 50 mile motorway journey, I pull in and top up the fuel (yes the correct type) then when I pull away it sounded like a small dog had got caught up in the engine, no power, burning smell etc... Apparently the "differential has actually exploded" according to the mechanics. I mean seriously, a 5 month old car!!! Anyone else heard of this???

Nothing like bigger wheels to screw up the diff. They impose additional strains and stresses on the drivetrain that it may not have been designed to cope with..........This should be a lesson to anyone considering fitting them to the smaller lower powered GPs.

Fiat wont repair it under warranty if they know or even suspect you have been running with the bigger wheels. There has been a few threads in here about g/boxes failing and its becoming common knowledge that bigger wheels can cause this.

Errm we have had this happen to x2!! one was our very own loan car other was a customers! neither of which had bigger wheels!

Which garage did you buy yur GP from?
Some have helpful service departments who will do what they can to have a car fixed under warrenty. Fiat pays to fix it not the dealer.

as you said fiat pay for the repair.... makes sense if it gets done under warranty keeps the customer happy, we get paid all is well!

Cheers for all the input,

Fiat are fixing it under warranty at the moment, apparently the garage are waiting for authorisation to carry out the repair. They haven't mentioned the wheels at all but in any case, I had them fitted by the Fiat garage when I bought the car so its all on them to fix it. No stumbling blocks so far though.

In the meantime, I get stuck with a hire Ka (yes I mean Ka, its brutal) lol!

Will keep you posted.

loll Jamie cant drive anyway ;) my moped could over take him :p

just kidding

when he took the car to fiat didnt he put the steelies on so they wouldnt accuse aftermarket wheels thou?

I think they could tell from the damage weither it was a dodgy part of caused by supersize wheels :p. If I remember right the accesories catalogue had the 17" Fork rims in and it had a warning saying only fit to 1.4 16v and 1.3&1.9Multijet models. Must be cause of the diff exploding issue :(.
