Technical Differential Exploding

Technical Differential Exploding

I think they could tell from the damage weither it was a dodgy part of caused by supersize wheels :p. If I remember right the accesories catalogue had the 17" Fork rims in and it had a warning saying only fit to 1.4 16v and 1.3&1.9Multijet models. Must be cause of the diff exploding issue :(.

see now thats the thing, some fiat dealerships say you can only put the fiat 1s on your car not aftermarket 1s.....

Its all i mind screw lol

surely if you buy 17s and low profile tyres the new ones should be the same size as the oringials with tyres.. thats the idea..if you put the standard rims next to the 17s they should be the same height?

Well nothings exploded but I am just waiting for authorisation for my gearbox to be changed on my standard 1.3mjet. Totally standard aswell so its not like bigger wheels or anything has caused a problem.

ye, i thik there are just a bach of shotey gear box's going around

Thing is it's not necessarily the extra weight that kills diffs, but more likely wheel-spin causing extra load on the planet gears, plus the rapid breaking/regaining of traction.

We've only had one Grande owner with a broken 'box- the layshaft bearing broke-up then the pinion/crownwheel lost teeth due to fragments getting jammed before some parts pierced the housing. Now this car was a 1.2 8v and had standard (Fiat) 16" alloys, but was clearly ragged constantly (4k on the clock, but the tyres were down to 3.5mm, and hideously chavved-up throughout ).

However, on this one occasion we decided to replace the 'box under warranty hoping they'd learnt their lesson (though the Fiat official visiting us at the time was convinced it was driver-error), though if it happens again they won't be getting another free 'box.

I'm not saying all of these broken boxes are caused by driver abuse (if so our courtesy cars would have been through several by now!;)) because there is always the possibilty of faulty boxes being released (mistakes happen) but the thing to bear in mind here is that the Grande range consists of about 5 different gearboxes (1.2/1.4 8v, 1.4 16v, 1.4 Tjet/1.3 mjet 75bhp, 1.3mjet 90bhp, and 1.9mjet), so not all these issues can be attributed to one common part.

More on my gearbox

Some of you will already be aware that my car has problems with the gearbox and I was told it would be replaced. Well Fiat havent authorised the replacement but instead it has to go into the garage in the new year and have the gearbox stripped down and repaired meaning its going to be off he road for a week! Needless to say I have gone from fed up to p****d off with Fiat. As soon as I am able to get rid of the Punto it is gone and I am never buying another Itallian car in my life!

****, I totally forgot about this post, ah well. If anyones still reading this or intersted. Fiat replaced everything unbder warranty, after waiting about 2 weeks for authorisation and delivery of the parts. Their mechanics said that there was no way that the alloys caused the damage, otherwise they wouldn't have replaced them. He wasn't too sure exactly what caused it though...hmm.
At least I didn't have to pay up,, that happened at about 7K on the clock, now I've done around 15K and fingers crossed no more problems.
