Hello....I've just been browsing and to my 'horror!' saw this.....

there is a good reason why the gp is heavily discounted now its nearly 2 years old come febuary there is also a point that come next june -july the gp gets a make over more improved so the discounts you get now wont look so great when the facelifted model comes out will it....????? written by 'jaysso'.

SO, after much deliberation I've just ordered a new GPS Multijet with the absolute assurance from the dealer that the current shape of the model will be with us for at least another 2 years. Can anyone shed some more light on this subject with some facts. I’ll be extremely upset if this is true!

Dream on! Of course it will be heavily discounted. Its a Fiat, and like Ford, Vauxhall and a few other makes the only way to shift them is to discount them. Are you seriously saying that you would pay a local dealer more for the same car that you can buy down the road, say 25 miles away, for £100s or even £1000s less??

How could the GP be made better looking with an facelift?

Changed yes... but for the better?

Doubt it, for me and most its just Purrrrrfect!

I've got an excellent deal with options from a reputable dealer thank you (I don't believe in saving money in place of good customer service).....it's the 'Face Lift' I'm worried about!

well the post you came across is rubbish in my opinion. They will probably face lift it but thats not why its discounted in my opinion. Anyway, if everyone went through life saying, i wont buy it now cos in a few years they will change it, no one would ever buy anything. You just have to bite the bullet and buy!!! Of course i could understand waiting if it was a matter of a couple of months to the facelift, but years?!?!

I would also imagine that a facelift would just move the lights a bit, nothing major!!

Well if you are naive enough to think that throwing a few extra quid at a dealer will give you better service, get on with it!
The reality is that most service (talking about workshops/warranty repairs and the greasy/oily end of the car buying & running experience) is cut throat for the operatives as well as the dealers.
If you read the service book you will see that the official time for a minor service on a GP is 1.6 hours....so how long do you think the "reputable mechanic" is going to spend on your pride and joy?
Say 45 minutes and he's just about to make a small bonus, if he takes 50 minutes his colleagues will complain that he's not pulling his weight.
Its a cruel world.
People winge at solicitors charging £200 an hour but translate that into your local garage charging £100 hour but only booking half that time to doing the job in hand and maybe you see my drift....

i was worried about this facelift, but if it was within the next 6 months or so then we would have seen some pictures or even a prototype, the abarth has been circuling the press for at least 12 months now.

Thanks for the passionate advise baldyoldgit but I fear you may be missing the point of my question!?

Thanks for the sensible comments guys....I'm sure there would of been prototype images by now too and of course as consumers we would never buy anything with the way most products are quickly being updated. Panic over I reckon.....should just enjoy my choice when it arrives mid november. Nice one Ffoxy....how could the GP be made better looking anyway!

also you may hate the facelift and you can say you have the retro look lol

if you go to italiaspeed.com there you will see that the gp is scheduled for a face in 2008 they are always on the money.do you think i just made it up:( of course any frickin dealer will tell you anything for you to sign on the dotted line:D you pays your money you take your choice.anyone who says the gp is perfect the way it is go to specsavers.there undoubtedly always room for improve in any car no matter how good it looks.it will change superficially next year.PROGRESS:p

"dream on of course it will be discounted its a FIAT"should tell that to all perspective buyers of the new 500 out in jan 08.NO you will be told its a fiat 500. supply and demand.same applied to the grande punto when it came out.the point is when a model is out after a period of time the more likely that the discount you will get will increase to keep sales on the increase until they bring out a newer version then they put up the price again.its the way all car manufacturers do business, catch my drift

No I didn't think you'd made it up Jassyo....sorry if it came across like that. Just wanted to put the subject out there for opinion that's all. Thanks for your comments BTW, would be much appreciated if you could send the actual 'italiaspeed' link. Cheers

G.P.S No reason you can't have a big discount and good customer service if you find a decent dealer. You would be mad to pay list price becasue people know what discount can be had and this is reflected in the second hand values. Thatswhy you can get a m-jet for £9000 second hand because a new one can be had for £10500 not to mention depreciation

Thanks nebrog23....I do have a good dealer and they have indeed given me a good discount off the list price. Any views on the face lift issue?

Well said.

The GP isnt perfect and will no doubt be facelifted I think it's a bit shortsighted to say it cannot be made any better and it's not going to happen.

Dealers will tell you more or less anything to make a sale, however nice the salesman seems. It's surprising how much more you know about the car you are buying than the dealer does. When I was car hunting I went to look at a clio 197, I asked the dealer if they had any in the showroom and he showed me a megane 225. Needless to say my faith in this salesman had been completely lost and I didn't stick around. I also went to look at a C2 VTS, the salesman told me I could gain 20-30bhp through a superchip and my warranty wouldn't even be affected, again, I left promptly.

80% of the time, as we all have found out one way or another, dealers talk shi*t. The internet and auto magazines have been a better source of information than my dealer ever has.

The facelift will probably make it look worse anyway, like they normally do. When I ordered a new Seicento in October 2000, the dealer assured me the facelift with multipoint injection etc wouldnt be out for at least 6 months, I got the car in December 2000, and it was their last non facelift, a week later there where facelifts everywhere!

Thanks for tarring us all with the same brush. (y)

Anybody actually wondered where a dealer gets their info from?

Thank Fiat for not giving them the information you seem think they are keeping from you.

It's alright.

I didn't actually mention my fiat dealer, when I ask them about the abarth for example, they tell me they only know what fiat tells them, and to be fair they are a very helpful bunch. So I do apologise on that front. BUT I stick to my opinion that salesmen in general have a sub-standard knowledge of their range.

Totally agree!! My Fiat dealer (in MY case) has been absolutely fine with regards to most issues.....maybe an anger fuelled and pre-judgemental buyer will over look that.

Also...Car journalism is surely one of the most inconsistent and banal forms of information publishing in the editorial world!

Agreed, and the car manufacturers love it as it brings publicity and hype to their unreleased cars. Which is why we see plenty of concepts, to keep potential buyers on their toes and let the consumer know that if they wait a while they might get something a bit more special than they could somewhere else.
