Hi. Have what seems like a major problem with my GP 1.4 Dynamic petrol. Registered late Sep 2006, purchased from fiat dealer 'nearly new' April this year.

Within a few minutes of running air con to cool car after sitting in car park, engine cut out and all warning lights came on (at traffic lights of course!) After several tries managed to start engine but warning lights (including ASB, power steering) remained on and I managed to limp home without power steering. Engine continued to cut in and out (warning lights coming on and all dials failing during cut out) Fault seemed to clear except for Engine warning light and message 'check engine'. A short run locally to check brought back all faults and needed assistance to push car to side of road!!

Sunday today...will ring dealer tomorrow but any suggestions would be welcome (not too tech please..I'm Moose44's wife posting under his name!!)

STOP ! Driving your car.

TBH I would arrange for it to be towed to the garage. Sounds like a major failure you have yourself there.

Driving it will not make it better!:bang:

If anything your making it worse and could be damaging your engine further.

Thanks - I reckoned it was bad and have no intention of driving specially as nearest dealer (where I bought it) is 30+ miles away!

I'm still wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this??

as the car is less than a year old you should still have Fiat AA cover on it. Give them a phone and ask them to take the to the dealer. You will probably have to wait till tomorrow as the dealer will be shut now (Sunday).

(y) That's a really useful suggestion. I've already had some probs with dealer over another issue so wasn't looking forward to asking them to collect. Will still be without a car tho...maybe I can get them to deliver a courtesy car:rolleyes: Ha Ha

Good idea.....definitely arrange for the AA to put the car on the back of a transporter and deliver it to the Fiat garage......don't drive it.....it's not worth it.
Best of luck.

That really isnt good mate, sorry to hear it. Im with everyone else, leave it be and get the AA to take it to the dealer. Its a mystery to me as to what could cause that.

Hope it all gets sorted ok.

Body computer update.

I'll certainly mention/insist that with dealers. Thanks everyone for all your advice. I'm signing off now so wish me luck for tomorrow. :)

I'll let you know how I get on.

Well, the AA came and took car away this am. No chance of courtesy car from dealer at short notice (suprise) Still waiting for news. Something to note for anyone in similar situation...AA will provide 2 days car hire if you break down away from home but NOT if they collect from your premises. Wish I'd thought about that earlier and risked driving quarter of a mile down the road before calling them!!

Well, we're making progress (sort of). Didn't hear from dealers yesterday but they rang this am to say all sorted! Rather doubted this, so insisted on speaking to technician who said he'd cleaned the earths & reset body computer which was "already updated". He seemed happy that he'd solved the prob as no fault codes were now showing until I reminded him that it was an intermittent fault and the AA had already cleaned the earths :bang:

Asked him to try test drive at various speeds/conditions and, to be fair, he said he'd give it two or three tries throughout the day. I also reminded him that the probs first started when I ran the aircon which he agreed to check.

I've just spoken to them again and apparantly the car died on HIM some way from the garage :D and more checks revealed probs with fuse box which is now replaced. Also confirmed a/c seals and something or other else faulty but will need to order parts. More test drives promised before they ring again tomorrow am - the saga continues!!

Seriously, thanks for all your help and support. The forum has given me the confidence to keep pushing until I'm sure things are right. (y)

It's really good that you are so thorough and pushed them to copy stuff that you had done to make it 'cut out'.....they're also pretty honest about what they had and had not done.....now they can see it's not just an 'earthing' or 'software update' problem they will probably get to the root of it.
I suggest you ask them to tell you EXACTLY what they found to be causing the fault and how this is linked to the air conditiong......if they know you're **** hot they're gonna try harder.
Hope it works out ok
