Technical First Oil Change

i just checked the service manual as got my service in sept and it say's for cars that need the 'low mileage annual service' (under 9000 miles) the engine oil and oil filter should be changed when the warning light comes on, or every 2 years! this is for diesel engines with DPF. does the 1.9 have DPF??

No the 1.9 does not have a DPF as standard, you would have had to pick it as an option and you would know about it as its far from cheap. £600 comes to mind, could be wrong though.

Well my little issue is resolved lol!! :)
FIAT rang me, cars due it 12 monthly service at just 9k miles......

Sort of a shame really... an 18k service interval, or 12 months whichever comes first for most peeps will be an annual service! :(
Whichever way, no-one will go longer than 12 months without a service. Which on average miles mean 12k service intervals?

Doh!!

I honestly think you're all worrying way too much. If Fiat say it's 18k or 1 year, then that's what it is! It doesn't need anything else. I will be running mine to 100k in two years, and I will only do the standard services, as required by the service schedule. I'm not in the slightest bit worried that this isn't enough.

I ran a citroen that had 20k service intervals for three years, and 155,000 miles, and the engine just got "normal" service from the citroen garage, and it was fine. At 155k it ran just as well as it did at 10k , if not better :)

the technology has been in place for a while, not to need an oil change for 100k, but car makers are unlikely to do this, as it would eat into their profits... I believe I read years ago that honda had this technology running, and successfully tested, after all the billions they spend on R&D if they gave me a car and said "it doesn't need an oil change for 100k, just top up with the right stuff when ness" I would believe them, why wouldn't I? lol...

:yeahthat:, as long as you've done your bit (i.e. checked fluid levels etc) then go by whatever Fiat says in the book. If anything goes wrong then its up to them to fix it.

Right then, my car has now done nearly 5k miles and i have been told that it really should have had an oil change by now as the engine has run itself in quite a bit.

The question is this, the manual says i should use 5/30 oil, would i be ok to use anything else?
Guys, can anyone confirm this. My handbook that came with an Active 1.2 says Selenia K 5W-40 for all petrol engines and Selenia WR 5W-40 for all diesel (page 227).
I also have a 1.4 16V and I know there are other threads in here talking about 5W-30.
The top up oil I was given for the 1.2 was the Selenia 20K 10W-40:confused:

For the G. Punto 1.4 16 valve the only oil they recommend is Selenia Performa oil.....comes in 2 litre cans £12 from your Fiat dealer......don't put the 'red' one in a 16 valve.

So why don't they say that in the handbook? What's the 'red' one? What Grade?

My dealer thought i needed 10W/40 in mine when it actually needs 5W/30. Take the advice that anyone on here has to offer, it will have more than likely have been researched well.

just had my oil changed at fiat. new filter, oil and sealing gasket came to £75

How may of you have compared the oil that you take out of your high tech engine at the "recommended" mileage with the new oil that you are about to put in? Preferably when it is cold. Would you put that back in your engine? Of course not, but it was in there yesterday! The cleaner the oil is, the better it is for your engine. That is obvious! Milk may have a use by date of 30th August on its container, but does that mean it will be nice to drink then? How many of us will ditch it a couple of days early and choose to drink fresh milk? There is certainly no harm in changing both the oil and filter early if you wish. I think this would be particularly rewarding if you intend to keep the car for over 10 years or 100,000+. Lets face it, you could probably run a car for 100,000 miles without changing modern oil if you wanted to, but you probably wouldn't want to hold on to the car for much longer after that!

For the 1.4 16V

Use the blue 5W-30 Performa Seelna oil from FIAT. I did, there's even a picture knockin aboot of it.
