Technical which engine oil?

Technical which engine oil?

Do they really make a significant difference?
I'm sure they do, which is why I'm trying to find the same spec oil - just cheaper.

Mobil 1 seems the best bet according to you guys, so next time I go to France on a booze-cruise I'll get some. Until then, I'll just have to pay the going rate at my local FIAT dealer!

Is it true that driving a turbo diesel engine too gently during the initial few thousand miles causes excessive oil consumption later in its life? Or is this an old wives' tale?

I'd say not allowing the engine to heat up before driving hard and not allowing to cool down after driving hard will cause more wear.

I've not heard of any JTDs with oil usage issues. My 6 year old 2.4JTD uses practically no oil between changes and is on 130k+

I bought some of the Selenia oil from my FIAT garage, but at £14 per litre I don't really want to be limited to that make.

Anybody have any comments to make (apart from me being a skinflint!)?

If you have been charged £14 per litre for the WR from Selenia then you paid virtually double the recommended retail.

basically no car should drink oil that quickly
i have the same problem if you look under the engine at the bottom of the gearbox area does it look like it abit oily
i think it may be due to the oil sump
take it straight to the dealer and tell them to fix it
:slayer:
hope this helps dude

I just checked my accounts based on your horror, and in fact I paid £9.17 for a litre which sounds a lot better. A full 5 Litre can would be ITRO £40 I suspect, so not an impulse purchase.

Perhaps I'll just buy another litre so I can top up my oil now (and keep the other emergency 1 Litre bottle in the boot) and see how it goes over the next few thousand miles.

Well I bit the bullet today and bought some more oil.

My GP has now done just short of 5,000 miles and has used nearly 1 litre of oil. So I topped up with the Selenia stuff from FIAT and bought another 5 litres for £41. This way I can keep the 1 litre bottle in the boot topped up and the unwieldy 5 litre can in the garage!

Guys at work say that oil consumption should reduce during the next 5,000 miles. Let's hope so or that 5 litre can won't be enough for a year's motoring...

Has anyone else needed to top up their GP diesel within 5,000 miles?

My experience is that I telephoned Desira, Southgate 0208-211-9117, and Thames Fiat, Slough, 01753-788000, and both of them were absolutely adamant that in the G. Punto 1.4 16 valve engine the only oil to use is Selenia Performa fully synthetic oil - (comes in a light blue 2 litre can unlike Selenia K which is in red can).

They say that Mobil 1 is a little too thin for the 16 valve engine.

The oil costs about £13 for a 2 litre can and the engine takes 2.9 litres......I think that's cheap and that's what I use.
