High level brake light bulb replacement

First off you need "type 286 12v 1.2w" Bulb/s available from most motor factors ideally you want to change them all as usually if one is at the end of its life all the others will have had the same amount of use so wont be far behind you will need 8 bulbs

Later revisions of the 2012 GP's handbook actually show the bulbs are 2.3w not 1.2w , At the time i wrote this there was no info in the older cars handbook as to the bulb type

it can be done without tools but sometimes needs a little persuasion with a medium size flat screw driver an electricians one is ideal as the insulation protects the paint work..

Now to get the lamp unit out.......

First open the boot (nice easy bit to start with)

And remove the 2 rubber blanking plugs

Now position a screw driver so you can push the light fitting out of the cars body work

At the same time press the little metal clip down with your finger...

(the above 2 movements should be done at the same time but since i was holding the camera i had to take 2 separate pictures..)

then ease the light out do a little at a time on each side moving the right hand side (as you stand at the back of the car out more than the left (the left hand side has the tube for the rear washer jet attached so has to be eased out to the right..

(you can also see one of the 2 metal retaining clips in the above pic)

so ease it out with the boot lid closed now

Next locate the 2 plastic retaining clips an bend them with your thumb to separate the bulb holder from the lens

Now replace the bulb DO NOT TWIST THE BULB a straight pull is all that is needed

(might be an idea to wear gloves if your a bit heavy handed dont want to be picking bits of broken glass out of your finger tips!)

Then put it all back together and push back into the boot.. At this point it might clip straight back in place and you can refit the grommets BUT chances are it wont...

get a freind to push the light fitting home then using the screw driver lift the clips up so they lock against the inside of the boot lid

Re: High level brake light bulb replacement

Any idea where I can get just the lens for the light? The little plastic bit that guides the rear washer fluid has snapped off on mine... :/

Hello Liam Welcome to the forum

your local fiat dealer is the obvious place to try and get a price...

however the interweb has a few places selling parts

http://www.shop4parts.co.uk/?name=st...=2852&sku=7195

if you kind enough to donate to this forum you get access to members offers and get the 10% discount code to use with them (shop4parts)

there is also Ebay

think you have to buy the complete assembly however unless you can find one in a brakers yard such as Motorhog.co.uk

Re: High level brake light bulb replacement

My high level break light stopped working altogether. The warning light (triangle with exclamation mark inside it) came on and my car said "check stop light".

and sure as dam it the other break lights worked fine but my high level break light is done for...none of the bulbs work/

I have changed all the bulbs to brand new ones as a couple were burnt out but still, the high break light doesn't work?!

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Re: High level brake light bulb replacement

Thanks a lot for this guide mate, just what I needed.

I bought these for 1.90 for 10, and had 2 spare after replacing them all

Delivery was quick and they all worked

One thing I did do though was fully disconnect the fitting then I bent the prongs slightly inwards so that it gripped the bulbs better
Thanks AgnessGP thanked for this post

Re: High level brake light bulb replacement

Does anyone know whether this is the same on the Punto Evo? Been trying to do this and it will only move a few millimetres. Almost seems like there's another hidden clip holding it but can't see anything.

Re: High level brake light bulb replacement

I had two bulbs out with one working between them - now I have two side by side after attempts to get the thing out - when I try the side to side to ease it out all that happens is it rocks the other side back where it started - I don't want to be to rough (already deformed tin work on holes) but I just can't get it to move-short of brute force is there any other approach that might work???

Re: High level brake light bulb replacement

Had the problem of none of the bulbs working on my daughters GP. We did replace the bulbs first as they were all blackened. But this didn't cure anything.
It seems the weak point in this high level light is the fine 3Amp cabling used to connect it. Where this passes through the rubber flexy tube from the bodywork into the tailgate it is constantly getting bent. Over the years one or both of the wires can break.
It was a bit of a faff, but I managed to fix my daughters for a grand total of 6
I didn't take any photos, but here is what I did. Obviously I wasn't certain that this was the problem, but was confident enough that this was the only thing I hadn't checked.

1 - Remove the high level light as per the instructions earlier in the guide.
2 - Disconnect the wires from the light and also the washer hose and put the light safely to oneside.
3 - Ease out the rubber flexy tube from the tailgate and start to feed out the cable for the light along with the washer hose. Note that there are also cables for the tailgate release if it is an electronic one, but you should have enough slack to work with.
4 - Ease out the rubber flexy tube from where it enters the side of the rear quarter panel. This one is a bit tighter and a little bit of help from a flat blade screwdriver might help.
5 - I was told that I could slide the rubber flexy hose along, but without disconnecting the the tailgate release cables too this just wasn't possible, so using some sharp scissors I cut the tube following the visible molding line and removed it that way. CUT CAREFULLY you don't want to snip any wires and you also want a nice clean cut for later when you come to refit the flexy

At this point my problem was obvious with one of the cables for the high level light was clearly broken in two. The other wire was also cracked. I think my problem had been caused by the rear window washer hose which had broken, possibly leaking water into the rubber flexy and rotting the wires, or more likely the fact that the hose had gone really hard and brittle, the opening and closing of the tailgate had caused this broken tube to eventually cut the wires.

I decided (due to time constraints) not to fix the rear window washer, so I removed the broken end of the hose completely and cut back the other end a little before sealing the end of the hose with some silicone and a small self tapping screw.

I decided that the wires for the high level brake light felt a little stiff and brittle so I decided to cut out as much as I could.

After unwrapping the wires from all the fabric protection I cut off the plug leaving about 10cm free.

So onwards -

6 - Cut yourself a length or two lengths of fresh 3A (or 5A at a push) cable giving you enough the replace the sections removed plus maybe a little working slack.
7 - In an ideal world I would have soldered and heat shrunk the new wires into place, but I didn't have that kit available so I resorted to some hand crimped inline connectors.
8 - Once the cables are reconnected I suggest popping the plug into the High level light unit for a quick test before refitting everything.
9 - Once happy that all is good, wrap your wires back up, I ruined the fabric tape taking it off so just used a covering of electrical tape
10 - Feed the wires back into the tailgate and refit the high level light.
11 - The fiddly bit. As I'd resorted to cutting off the flexy tube I had to get it refitted, so I wrapped it around the wires again in its correct position but did not stuff the grommet ends back into the bodywork just yet. Here is where your clean cuts become important. Use some superglue to glue together the chunky grommet ends of the flexy. Let them set and then you can stuff them back into place on the tailgate and the bodywork. It's then just a case of working along the cut and gluing the flexy back together bit by bit, being careful not to glue it to the wires inside.

This probably took me about an hour and a bit, so was 6 well spent as opposed to probably a couple of hours labour at an auto electricians.

Hope that helps.

Hi all

I've just tried replacing bulbs in sisters car and lights still not working so I'm guessing it's a broken wire somewhere. Her mot is due soon, would this count as a fail?

Cheers

Neil
