They have quoted me £275 to tint the windows on my Stilo. They need 4-5 hours to do and I get a courtesy car while they work.

I have also been thinking about tint's.

I have a few questions if anyone can help.

Do you have to take door windows out?
Will opening the windows scratch them?
Can you put it over screen demisters?
Can an amateur really make a good job?

I only ask because I did a job many moons ago when tint sheet was like thin cling film and ended up with bubble wrapped windows. :(

85% of Marea HLX drivers have speeding tickets.... lol they'll have to catch me first.

Having done two cars myself and had two done profesisonally I think I can answer honestly:

1, No, you don't take the windows out
2, Yes, opening and closing will scratch them but it is very rarely noticable
3, Yes you can, they work fine on the rear screen
4, NO NO NO NO NO! Anyone who ever looks at your windows will instantly know you did them cus you were too tight to pay to have them done professionally.

Just looked at your link Lead. I notice that they won't do more than a 35% tint on the front windows. As I have a Sky Window that will not make much difference to the visibility of the interior of the car from the outside :( My last Punto had a higher tint on for 3 years and not once did I have any trouble from the police or anyone else.

I am going to take the risk and have it tinted more darkly somewhere else. It's not the end of the world to have the front two windows redone in a lighter tint sometime, probably won't cost much either.

A couple of years ago I spent hours tinting the windows on my Series 3 Land Rover and you can definitely tell it is a DIY job. The glass is perfectly straight on the Landy and I even tried taking one of the panes out - didn't get much better results. I think it's like plastering - a task that requires much practice. I therefore think I would rather pay a professional to do it for me. (Maybe if I was a younger lad, with a car worth only a few quid and only my wages from Tescos, I would do it myself, but I'm not :D )

As a bonus, I called my insurance company and told them I was thinking of tinting my windows. They said it will not effect my premium and that I don't even have to tell them if I do it.

So I am still looking for other quotes...

Polecat, get it done professionally. The rear screens are a bugger to do. On my Weekend it is done with three seoarete pieces, I personally think the glass is best removed for better finish.
My tints were done some 3 years ago now and there not scratched, it all depends on the quality of the tints used, mine were done by Cappuccino Tints from Leeds thoroughly recomend him, he also uses film that actually goes darker in strong sunlight.
