Re: Ps3

That's just plain ugly, for that sort of money you would think it would be a less retro looking brick.

You know, Sony can make 80,000 bricks, and people would buy them. So the real competition--you're going to see the impact of our innovation and all the momentum we have in Christmas 2007. This Christmas, the story is: XBox 360 is going to sell super-well, and they'll sell the rounding error amounts they can make.

Ditto, i'll be waiting til at least 3rd gen, my 2nd gen PS2 is stupidly noisy, but bombproof, it's still going with a shagged laser and has been left to fry for weeks on end yet still goes. Prefer it to xbox, I hate them, plain and simple.

Re: Ps3

okay so the legendary edge has a few hands on op[inions on the PS3
its markedly quieter than the 360,now this is a criticism i would level at the 360.
i was very surprised/dissapointed on its noise levels especially when booting a game up
the PS3 controller is rumbless, something i knew but added for anyone who doesnt
that little flap on the front is described as flimsy, shame
wifi/bluetooth integration is very good
psp integration as well as you can use it as a monitor/control over wifi so can watch movies etc on the psp streamed from the PS3
unconfirmed but the prototypes they had had the lower 20GB machine without wifi or memry reader slots???
surely a big error if so?
the GUI of the PS3 is very media centre orientated, the icons for games isnt even the 1st one.its 5 along so sonys home hub aims are obvious
they are also planning a full on paid for download service but this isnt going to be fully in place till 2007

EDIT:forgot to add,size................
compared to the premium 360 inc HD
the ps2 is approx
20mm wider
15mm taller
20mm fatter(edges words)
and heavier though it does have an internal PSU.so its a big machine for
those who have or who have handled a 360

the WII by comparison stands vertically and at its highest point is below the Playstation 3 writing on a vertical PS3 so less than 1/2 the height and going by pics half the width

Re: Ps3

okay some launch titbits

Quote Quote:
It appears that the all mighty Sony is yet again hit with pains associated with their hardware launch. For the many people far and wide that can remember back in the days of the PS2 launch, where as little as a few months after purchasing the vaulted unit, were treated with the infamous "Disc Read Error" (myself included... twice); it seems that launch bugs have taken another bite.

Although not on such a grand scale of incapacitation of the disc read error, the new PS3 appears to be suffering from a software glitch that is not allowing it to live up to one of the claims made by Sony during it's many early showings. 100% backwards compatibility. It seems that due to this glitch, almost 200 individual games including the likes of Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy suffer from no audio or graphic glitches when loaded in a PS3. Lists can be found on the Internet outlining at least 192 confirmed games that do not work for the new unit. Although Sony has refused to admit to an exact number, they did reply that they will be issuing an update patch in the very near future to fix this problem.

Sony claims the patch will make its system backwards compatible as it once claimed, but it makes you wonder what happened to the research and development groups during OS testing

Eager consumers hoping to whet their appetites with a Japaneses version of the Sony PS3 that launches in 2 days will be in for a little shock. Apparently this first run of PS3 consoles does not contain the correct firmware to enable it to connect to the Playstation Network hub. Have no fear as the update is fairly simple, if nothing more than just a simple annoyance.

If that doesn't trip your trigger for Sony being the master of release hardware, there's more. The much touted ability to connect the PS3 with a PSP has also run into a bit of a snag. Whether merely software concerns, or yet another attempt at stopping "homebrew" applications on the PSP, users will need to update their PSP to version 3.0 in order to connect to their new PS3s. Unfortunately it seems that this update will not be available until at least the end of November.

Just days after it's sell out Japanese launch, the Sony PS3 already has downloadable television content via the Japanese network, So-net.

Details are sketchy at the moment as far as pricing and availability, but from what we can tell, these downloads are available in H.264 format, DRM free and available in resolutions of 720p to 1080p. With the console being so new to the consumers, there's no reports yet as of whether or not this content will be able to be retrieved from the PS3's hard drive.

Since these downloads are only visible on the Japanese based So-net, there's no confirmation on the same type of treatment for U.S. buyers when the console is released in the States on the 17th of November.
Quote Quote:
A Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun, "a leading Japanese economic newspaper, also known as the Nikkei," has reported that the Japanese launch for PlayStation 3 will be cut by around 20,000 units. The story doesn't reveal cuts on other regions, neither does Sony.

The original number of consoles for Japanese launch, 100,000, has been cut by Sony because of "component shortages," and even though the original 100,000 was "more of a target", Sony and Sony Computer Entertainment America vice president Jack Tretton has recently admitted that "Clearly we've had production issues."

Japanese retailers have obviously had problems with their preorders. The Japanese Nikkei claims that Tsutaya Online ended preorders after only six minutes and Amazon Japan after 20 minutes.

North American PS3 launch on November 17 hasn't been cut, and the "more of a target" 400,000 consoles remains untouched.

The launch of PlayStation 3 has filled gaming and technology news, but the Open Platform for PS3 has dropped a bomb. Ealier Sony promoted the Open Platform with Yellow Dog Linux operating system available and upgradeable for your PS3, now it seems like it is not going to stop there, you'll be able to install most of you favorite Linux distros also.

The installation of such operating system is made possible by Open Platform for PS3, claiming in its website that "PLAYSTATION®3 allows any desired third-party system software to be installed on it." This means that you'll be able to install any Linux distro with a PowerPC build available, and there a lot of them - Ubuntu, Gentoo, Fedora Core and SUSE to name a few.

Sony has released documents regarding Linux on the PS3, that includes an installation and setup how-to for Fedora Core 5. All you need is Other OS installer, available later from Sony's own Open Platform website, Addon Packages CD, and Fedora Core 5 installation
DVD.

European gamers anxious to get hold of the Playstation 3 console before its offical release in early '07 may be disappointed by the news that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has promised use the "full scope of the law" to prevent that from happening.

The eagerly anticipated console will begin retailing North America and Japan next month but is not sheduled for release in the European market until March 2007.

Last week a British judge ruled that Lik-Sang, a Taiwanese import/export firm, could not sell the Japanese version of Sony's handheld PSP gadget in Europe, setting a precedent for potential importers of PlayStation 3 console.

A spokesman for SCEE told BBC News, "The law is clear, and grey importing PS2, PSP or PS3 into the EU, without the express permission of SCEE is illegal. Therefore, we will utilise the full scope of the law to put a stop to any retailers who chose to do this."

The spokesman noted that Japanese or American PS3 models would not play older European-sold software for the first two PlayStations, would not play EU Blu-ray films or DVDs, and would not be covered by any sort of warranty. "Ultimately, we're trying to protect consumers from being sold hardware that does not conform to strict EU or UK consumer safety standards," he added.

Re: Ps3

I had the 2nd gen PS2 and it broke just after the warranty ran out. I've got a new one now but can't wait to get my hands on a ps3 in march or April when all the teething problems have been sorted out. My other half has an Xbox but I never wanted one, every console should be backwards compatible I would miss my other games if it wasn't "shadow of the colossus" is a fantastic game and Ico is great too if you haven't already got them I highly recommend them.

as are M$ but not once will you have seen me moot it as a big deal.
i have a modded xbox which can run emulators for the ps1,amaiga etc & entire ninty back cat' up to the N64
ninty are offering the backwards compatibility through all previous consoles as a pay per use system(TBC on how exactly)
im not interested.
i do like the fact they have put all the gamecube ports in the WII so if they offer GC games it could be feasible.
the only worry is they will clamp down on ROM sites since they can now make income from nes, snes roms again.
dont get me wrong im not tied ot any brand as such.
yes i will defend ninty to the hilt but im a fanboy
i like(d) M$ because the modded xbox 1 was/is great and will live in my living room for some time yet as the media centre software is yet ot be beaten.
i just find the sony fanboys a little tiring in there blinkered view
