If you buy a new Xbox 360 that has yet to be connected to live, then whatever you do, DO NOT let the console update via xbox live.

Microsoft have released an update that will crash your new 360 and render it useless until repaired by them.

Older machines that have already been updated to the stage before this last one are fine.
Just wait till the update has been fixed before doing it, I'll post here when I hear anything new.

Error code will be E71.

I know this because I tested a new machine yesterday and it crashed straight after the update and lots of other people are in the same boat.

how new is new mate... had ours about 3 weeks roughly and updated it the other night..

if it worked after the update then i guess you will be fine. :)

thanks for the update mark (y) im still waiting for my broadband to be connected at the new house before im online again.

E71..................that's a HDD error code AFAIK.

Well, it might be.............had a quick search and noone seems to know for sure  But I did read something where removing the HDD stopped the E71 code appearing.

right its all speculation just now(was gonna post as well koa but you beat me to it)
M$ have now admitted a fault and are bringing out a fix ASAP

M$ release...............
We're hearing from a small number of customers (less than 1%) that are having issues with the Fall Console Update. I've been told that the team should have an updated version in the next 12-24 hours. We'll let you know when the issue is resolved.

If you are having problems with the update for any reason, please call Xbox Support (1-800-4-MY-XBOX in the US and Canada). We're working with those affected to get them back up and running, and we're committed to making sure the update doesn't cause problems for anyone else.
(obviously this is from M$ USA)

now its a 2 error code fault, the error 71 is affecting newer ones
error 66 is also comnig up but only for samsung drives with hacked firmware.
now it seems its only new xbox 360's who have not already been updated in the last live update.so if you updated before nov 1st you 'should' be okay but for the sake of 48 hours i would wait.
custard is awaiting his new 360 and will not be updating till its all calmed down.
now as of yet no 360's with modded firmwares have been banned from live however the E66 is thought to perhaps be down to new DVD drive/firmware version checks.
it could be M$ is checking but is holding out on bans for now.
however as with xbox 1 expect M$ to ban mac addys of hacked 360's rendering them useless for live.
on the xbox 1 there were ways of fixing this with new 'virgin EEPROMs however its different on the 360

The HDD fault was what I was hoping it was but it isn't. I tried my other drive in it and still the same, it's the system itself that gets messed up.

Have Microsoft actually pulled the update Custard ? Surely they should if they know the problems there.

as said at some point M$ will work out how to check firmware versions etc and ban 360's from live.
may end up being like i was on xbox 1 and having a live unmodded xbox.
i would truley expect M$ to have organisaed something for this update and would be surprised if we dont see bans soon.
M$ may even be logging peoples firmware/MAC addys now to unleash a mass ban at a later date

running hacked DVD firmware came right at the end of XBOX 1's life as the 360 was launched and was quickly transferred to the 360 hardware.unfortunatly for M$ they focused more on the traditional chipping route and wasnt really prepared for hacked firmwares.
there short term solutions are things such as putting epoxy resins over chips etc to hinder easy access

Yeah 3 months warranty in the states is a complete joke, especially as the 360 ain't exactly reliable.
Thank god for the one year we have here as I had to use mine last week for a sound problem. Although they did send me a new 360 back with a new HDD:mad: so I lost all my saves. Idiots.
They told me the new machine was also covered for a further 2 years but I seriously doubt that, the people on their help line are unbelievable thick, they really don't have a clue.

yeah thats the issue luke, not all machines are affected.
may be your machine has the earlier update already or the drive/firmware configuration isnt affected

360 reliability does concerm as im keen to get it ripped open, also considering starting led, window mods etc and really CBA if there are relaibilty issues.original xbox was probably the most reliable of the consoles of its era
