Hi,
Looking to get a new console as im bored of the PS2, so which is the better one to go for?

Ive always been a playstation fan, but with teh rediculous cost of the ps3, the moulds been broken. It seems the 360 has a good online game community, and the performance is great. Could this be said for the PS3?

Hardly because the ps3 isn't released in the UK till next march now. The 360 is a great console, I have had mine since launch day last year and I wouldn't part with it.

360 gets my vote. Playing Perfect Dark Zero on Live is kick ass  I wouldn't mind test driving a Wii either :)

PS3 wont be much better graphically or games wise than the 360. Both have very similar graphics solutions in actual fact i think the 360's is slightly better. But the CPU in the PS3 is better unfortunately due to its design its a total bitch to write for. Know a few friends in the business and they hate the thing already.

The game pads are another funny thing the rechargeable batteries in them cant be replaced. So when the batteries go in a year or so you have to buy a whole new pad.

I have a 360 and its a great console Xbox live is brilliant and theres some good games on it already and some brilliant titles coming to the system. At the end of the day depends what games you want to play and how much you want to spend. But you can pick up a 360 now the premium version with hard drive etc 4 games and 2 pads for £300. HD-DVD add on is gonna be another £100 - £130 which includes King Kong HD with it.

Id say buy a 360 unless you really wanna spend £500+ on a console with the PS3 games also being really expensive at £60 each. There both good systems i just cant bring myself to spend that much on a console. Talking £600+ once you add a game and an extra pad etc.

And if you like Racing games give Test Drive Unlimited a go. i bought it the other week and spent 5 hours on the thing just driving round the island. Looks amazing if you have an HDTV.

Also, I'm sure I've heard that for PS3 games such as Gran Turismo, you buy the game, but you don't have all the tracks and cars available - you have to buy them on top

They do that in test drive but you get a few cars extra but theres already 90+ in the game and the extras are not much money. But the developers are listening to what cars people want in the game and adding them if they can get the deals to.

Still, it's bound to put people off - I know I would be. Of course, it depends on prices etc, but IMO, at this point in time, it looks to me like the PS3 will have a hard job to beat the 360. Then we have the Wii coming out soon too.

Whats the deal with Xbox Live Silver and Gold? Do i have to have a gold membership to play others online?

wozza, wheres the best place to get those sort of deals? Best ive managed to find is 360 premium, 2 wireless controllers and project gotham racing for £289.99 delivered (play.com)

Toys R Us had them for £300. HMV had an offer on for £350 with 4 games which is what I got. console, extra wireless pad, 4 games Project Gotham 3, Just Cause, Test Drive Unlimited and Table Tennis. Also bought Dead Rising which is a fun game.

Just shop around tis coming up for Christmas should be loads of deals soon.

And ask them if they will give you some discount if you buy other bits at the same time, Like play and charge pack and extra battery on top etc. I did and they knocked a bit more off for me.

I honestly can't remember the difference off the top of my head

Silver allows you to download content and browse live, Gold is whats needed to play online which is £40 a year. You get a free 1 month trial of gold when you buy the system though.

finally got round to ordering a 360
anyway with the PS3 you are paying for a bluray drive whether you want it or not.
hence the cost.
M$ now offer an HD dvd drive add on for around £100 IIRC however games consoles add ons have pretty much alwas failed so we shall see.
on papaer the PS3 should be better on the games graphics front but as said its complicated and anyone who remebers the saturns dual processor will know how developers dont like machines that require a lot of dedicated coding/development.
the HD/bluray format war is just starting so god knows whats gonna come of that

with the PS3 you are paying for a bluray drive

Which is??

i have a ps2 and am definatley getting a ps3 when it comes out, simply because i hate the 360 controllers with a passion, its like holding a breeze block ffs, and the ps3 is a third of the size of the 360, plus i have gone through all the playstations and can't bear to go over to the 'dark side' that is microsoft:cool:

I have also heard that the ps3 is going to be a lot more advanced than the 360 in the way of graphics and game speed. can anyone confirm that???

as for performance?

well its a tricky one, both have higher specs in some areas and lower in others.
in real terms theres little in it,360 is on the shelves with proven graphics.most of the sony stuff is pre rendered hyperbole and anyone remember how the ps2 emotion engine was going to change the face of gaming?
power isnt everything or do the ps2 fanboys not remember the xbox 1 is more powerful than the PS2?
its down to games, each console will have exclusives and depending on your playing style will dictate a lot.
eg the PS2 has cornered the market on fun party style games, buzz singstar etc
get the 360 now and wait for the PS3 to finally arrive and then see what you think.plus you can wait for post launch price drops
