Gran Turismo 5

erm, reminds me alot of GT4. I guess it's early days but from my opinion, in a rush or rather an effort to get as many cars in the game as possible. Alot of elements seem to be just making par. Some cars look a little under done, while others are striking. Some of the surroundings look so fake (trees and stuff) whilst the shadows and buildings on some tracks are purely amazing. I dunno what it is but it's not quite what i expected, but alas it's here finally

it was either going to be a masterpiece or flawed given its time in development

I thought it would be like GRID, but a little more involved and bigger. After all is said and done, i like (at the moment) the driving experience, damage and so on of GRID, whilst short and a bit repetitive, its a more complete experience.

I think its bipolar as a game, some bits look amazing and play great, but then theres stuff that looks like it has literally been recycled from GT4 with no work whatsoever, and the empty wooden thud you make when you crash into something is the least convincing effect in a racing game ever..

Comon lads in 5 years you could have done better than that golf..

The Prius is really impressive, soulless and bland to drive but the way they've modelled the intricracies of the hybrid system is very good indeed, maybe thats where they spent the time. Although why you'd spend all that time and effort on it is beyond me...

i quite like it.

Gameplay seems a little short, with far too few events to enter, though as to whether more unlock as you go on i don't know yet but somewhat doubt it.

As said cars vary between cardboard models to the exquisitely detailed proffessional models.

Loading times are far, far too long for my liking. even with it installed, though part of this is due to connecting to the internet. so can be speeded up by disconnecting, though the patch may sort this out?

The driving is excellent. the different cars feel different, and more importantly feel realistic. take most FWD cars and Understeer will appear, take a powerfull RWD car and you will spin out if you're not careful. Different cars also behave differently. for example cars of the similar power and weight behave differently. Also it looks good on the replays when your on 2 or 3 wheels when cornering/braking.

I like the new tuning centre, rather than having to go to the manufacturer as in previous games which was a bit of a waste of time when it was all the same. The GT auto centre is also pretty good, respraying cars to any colour you own, so if you win a nice car in a disgusting colour you can respray it. Aerodynamic parts can be added, spoilers, wings and diffusers etc. Also you can rebuild the engines which loses power over time.

The addition of wipers to premium models only, means that rain races are very realistic with spray blocking almost everything, you can flash your lights at any time, dip your lights on night races, also Horns are on all cars for no apparent reason, but you can change horns with ones you own if you so wish. It's just a shame there's so few premium cars in relation to simple ones.

It's a shame really as it's been in the making for so long, but as i say, i prefer thje 'feel' of GT4, though cars do drift well in GT5. With so many other car games on the market now, its a shame they didn't do more to distinguish themselves from the rest.

GRID, though being VERY arcade like, actually has a superior damage model IMHO, with the knock on effects of damage being really well linked. Also GRID had many random incidents happen in game by the AI, whereby GT5's AI just seem so poised and correct its annoying. I remember being in a race in GRID, on the last lap i was 2nd place about 1.5 seconds behind the leader, and on the last bend the leader had a blow out and spun into the barriers leaving me to cruise to a victory I never thought possible. GT5 on the other hand, has none of this from my experiences so far, they just race around sticking vaguely to the racing line suffering none of the spontaneous effects of real racing.

Then you have games like Need for Speed SHIFT, once you get over the fact the tyres are made of sheet metal with practically no traction on the corners at high speed what so ever, you begin to appreciate the fact it takes alot of skill and care to win races. You can't just tune up a car and blast round and win, also the damage model on that is amazing aswell, if you get past the fact it other drivers dont seem to have the due care that you do when over taking.

GT5 has few areas it excells in to set it apart from the other aging games on offer, especially the time and budget they've had to work with. I like GT5 generally, and i like polyphony digital, but maybe they should've left the designing of the GTR's computer/clocks alone and spent more time on this game and those whom invest in the franchise.

Played the game - got bored...
Was looking forward to this game for a while but was Very Disappointed with it:(
Graphics are not as good as they should be for the "Standard" cars, You can't upgrade the brakes on your car - makes it a pain when you make the cars faster then need to add 1,000,000 miles onto your stopping distance - defeates the point... (excuse the spelling:p)

Car sounds are much better than gt4 - good point:eek:
The cars act Much more real(y) - also Good point(y)

at £35 though i would want more, the level up system is a pain, make the game slower.

Managed to edit music list for the menu so it's not so dull(y) - took a LONG time to do this though(n)

Gameplay is Very easy:confused: good or bad i dont know, means i have nothing to do while i wait for the level up system to catch up(n)

Damage is poor, after the race your car is fixed? - i'd exspect it to be left damaged untill you fix it(n)

Topgear test track isn't fab either, you have invisible walls(n)
Money is easy to get - one race 5,000, a new car - 3,000(n) (second hand - slow car) but u get the point, gt4 took a while to get money unless u won a cool car and sold it for 300,000 etc etc (at the start)

Online was offline due to congestion(n) so not been on that

The list goes on... tempted to give 4.7/10 but i'll give i more time:)

with regards to brakes, all cars come fitted with a brake balance controller. so you can adjust the pressure, i've not had a problem with brakes on any car which seems strange, considering some are putting out 800bhp from the 300bhp they started with.

Also when you buy the fully customisable suspension you need to set it up yourself as the standard settings give you no camber, adjusting this will make your car go round corners.

I work on racing suspension and engine mod at uni atm, so thats not the issue. I got a yaris from 80bhp to 540bhp, i cannot get it to stop on gt5?

Seems silly

does a bit, why did you get a yaris to that much power

my current settings are to put more braking at the front, and also lower the front suspension slightly compared to the back. which seems to work on most of my cars.

Tyres make a huge difference if you're not already using soft race tyres.
