Sony's PlayStation Network appears to have suffered a clock or calendar glitch which has left thousands of PS3 consoles unplayable

Sony said it was working hard to identify and resolve the problem, which has left thousands of PS3 owners unable to play games or access the PlayStation Network and has, in some cases, deleted or corrupted trophy achievements.

Speculation is rife that the problem has been caused by a clock or calendar bug. The fault emerged overnight, as console calendars switched from February to March, with many PS3 owner reporting that their console clock had reset itself to Dec 31, 1999 or Jan 1, 2000.

The fault appears only to affect owners of older PS3 consoles, rather than the more recent, 'slim' versions. Gamers have reported seeing an error message that reads: "8001050F – Hardware failure. Cannot update Firmware or connect to internet". They then report being unable to access or play content downloaded from the PlayStation Network, and in some instances, have complained that trophy and achievement data has been compromised or deleted.

Sony said that its engineers were working "flat out" to fix the glitch. "We have found out that some users are experiencing a network connection failure when signing on to PlayStation Network," said Sony in a statement. "We are currently looking in to the issue to identify the cause of this network connection failure and will update further information as necessary on the PlayStation blog and official website. We appreciate your understanding and continued support."

Sony said that PS3 owners could continue to use their console in offline mode, and for gameplay and other tasks that don't require internet access. However, some gaming websites are warning PlayStation 3 owners not to turn their consoles on at all until a fix has been issued, because some users have reported problems with their console even when they haven't tried to log on to the PlayStation Network.

So it's not as if it's bricked peoples consoles? LOL Just people can't get online atm?

WTF is such the fuss?

Why don't people just use the other features instead that Ps3 offers? like internet browser, PlayTV to watch freeview and record to Ps3 harddrive, iplayer? or watch a blu-ray in 1080p high definition? Or play your 320gbs worth of music? or play PSN games that don't require a connection to the "Playstation network"? LOLLLL ;') :'D (;

Apparently you cant do any of that.

i don't think not turning it on makes a difference tbh. i'm not too worried, it'll be fixed or i get another new ps3 hopefully a slim one, which reminds me to back up data again, assuming it hasn't lost it all  fortunately not got much on it at the moment.

well i just switched my fatboy ps3 on the clock and date are corrtect im signed it and playing gt5p online....load of balls...

I couldn't play COD MW2 last night because it checks for the trophies online, it just kept on shutting me out and then this morning my son had the same problem with Fifa10, hopefully it will be fixed tomorrow :)

From a PS3Fanboy Site

Sitting in the silent room,
Their clocks were ticking still,
But ‘neath their High-Def Bravias,
their consoles breathing nil.

‘Cos money buys you games to play,
and laughter with some mates,
they’ve said ‘it just does everything’,
but don’t trust it knows the date.

also:

Its fixed now, but the data shows up at 29/4/2020 LOL.

And btw if you could play earlier and you have a fatty console, its because its one of the newer fatty ones.

Hull fc matt, dont worry you havent screwed it up. it wouldnt let you play any games that are new enough to have the trophy function.
For example Cod4 MW1 was non trophy game, so that could be played but cod WAW and Cod MW2 couldnt be:)
