My brother has got the Halo 360 (green/orange camoflauge case). The HDD is obviously, in a matching case.
Can the HDD inside it be upgraded? By this I mean take the old HDD out of it case and put in a larger capasity one? so the case still matches?

For standard use it cannot...

The harddrive has encrypted sectors and the start of the drive relating to size and model, which prevents you installing any size hard disk.

If you are lucky enough you could find the same model hard disk, with suitable software you can flash the microsoft firmware to the drive.

But it has to be the same drive (Western Digital Scorpio BEVS 2.5" SATA HDD) and you are stuck with the lower models iirc (20gb, maybe 60gb)..

There is a 250gb elite coming out in a month or two, so the 120gb drives may come down in price

look on xboxhacker.net, or here for more info.

The only other way round it is to buy a larger official drive and swap the casings over.

nothing is hacked, he would know where to begin with that one!
What if he was to get another 360 HDD, and swop them? Is that possible.

You can fit a bigger drive sure. But the encypted sectors at the start of the drive stop it being detected than anything other than the size of the drive the data was taken from.

What i was saying is you cannot fit anything larger than what has been released by MS. 120Gb is the largest then until the 250 is released and someone gets the security data from that drive.

what he doesn't show is that u need the security sectors of a real 360hdd. you can extract these and write em on a new disk BUT the security sectors include information on the size of the drive and an encoded serialnumber. therefore u CAN NOT use more than 120GB even if u have a 500GB hdd the biggest ss.bin file u can get makes only 120GB available. more importantly the sereialnumber, likely to be used by many other "hackers", will get u banned sooner or later

Not too sure, its 20 gig now. future proofing I guess.

Ironically thats the same size hard drive as the first PC I bought

you see i have an elite but all i do is rip what game im playing regularly to the HD
so no real need for massive space.
if the 360 or PS3 played more formats nativly then i would be more interested
