buying a ps3

And after all this Is a UK based forum, we should be only talking about the UK models am I right no?
Er, no you are wrong.

This isn't a UK based forum - it has a .com domain name, hosted in the States with the owner living in the Far East.

But granted, with it being a English-speaking forum, the majority of members are indeed based in the UK - also helped by the fact there aren't that many FIATS in the US!!!

You obviously understood what I meant though

I'v recently bought a ps3 80gb for £310 brand new with sonic an little big planet and 2 years warranty from my local game. Only bought it due to my 360 elite goin red light of doom, luckly it was under warranty ( was only 4 month old) and this is my second 360, first 1 died of red light but was only a basic model . my ps3 so far (touch wood) has bein perfect.

My verdict is so far ps3 more reliable but 360 has more games at the minute but ps3 is better online and both consoles are nearly same on the graphics but ps3 is more pricey at the minute, but personally id go for ps3 especialy if you was thinkin of buying a blue ray player

Game don't stock 160gb its a limited edition  Seen them in Currys http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/sto...null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=300742&category_oid=

Also not sure why Game website is still listing 40s for 300 quid when they were discontinued donkeys ago and replaced with the identically priced 80gb... Game stores rather than the website haven't stocked those for getting on for a year.

Game... and a number of other stores/websites... bought in an excessive number of 40gb units, which then didn't sell for a number of reasons. There hasn't been a recall for these, so the companies are still trying to sell them - all be it for £300 because otherwise they wouldn't make a profit. The shop I work in is exactly the same position with stock as Game!!

I was just still surprised they were 300 quid...if you wander into a Game store you can get a ps3 80gb kill zone and Fifa for the same price or possibly 10 quid more, not sure as i'm off this week...personally i'm of the view its better to shift them at a loss than not shift them at all.

strongly suggest a 3 year warranty, mine packed up recently, and it appears to of affected quite a few systems. Sony want £150 to replace it with a reconditioned one. at least with 360 the faults are recognised and dealt with.

it was good when it worked though, mine is the 60GB one so probably why it packed up tbh.

The shop I work in offers the 80gb + game for the same price - £300. It's nuts, but the same time it's not dead stock yet. Unfortunately, a number of companies are getting greedy at the mo, so they will not sell them at anything below the system price unless they are nonpristine for whatever reason.

It's a bit crazy, but there isn't a recall to punt them back to Sony. I wouldn't buy a 40gb when I could have an 80gb for same price/just a bit more - so I agree with ya, I was just saying why they are still there lol.

Anyhow... back on topic! Custard - ps3 + 2 chart games is going for about the £340ish mark in most places at the mo, depending on the games and their value and/or any accessories. Shop around though, there are still some bank holiday deals hanging about.

If you get a HDMI, get a decent one. Don't fall for the prices in Currys etc, buy online! And, I would consider getting the warranty on it because of known failures with the units. You'll probably pay just as much for a 2nd hand one with warranty as you would a brand new one.

Nah 340 is a bit steep unless your getting a pad and HDMI...also second hand 80gb are 250 with a year warranty IIRC or 230 for a 40gb. There always the opportunity of the PS3 pron bonus with one of these tho...the number that come in with utter filth on the HD is untrue.

Totally irrelevent. Absolute Bull about the quality of the HDMI cables, like monster etc. I know your not using HDMI but never let them draw you in.
HDMI is digital signal, 1's and 0's. The signal passes through the cable and it either gets there or it doesn't. It can never fluctuate as in signal quality(unless we are talking about distances over 40m), only analogue can do this.
A £1 will do the exact same job as a £80 monster cable.
The only quality difference will obviously be the quality of the outer protection plastic, usually a lot better in cases like sony cables. that is why you pay more.
Hope this helps anyone who isgoing to be buying a HDMI cable in the future

got it
toysrus are doing a 80gb ps3 with either little big planet/killzone 2 for £279
picked up 3 singstar games  so it was like £335 for the PS3 and 4 games
3 of which she actually wanted

eventually got the game booted after registration, firmware updates and game updates...........................

right ive got to ask
im sure i will be lambasted but anyway, why does the PS3 not have backwards compatibility?
seriously, dropping hardware compatibility i can understand (even skimming over Sonys trumpets of 'true' BC..............................
but given the PS3's oft touted powerhouse status then why cant it emulate the PS2?
the 360 is emulating the xbox 1 with totally different hardware. not perfect but does the job more or less

The production of 60gbs in EU and 80gb's in america used the emotion engine chip and the 60gb used software emulation but had to be taken out due to production costs so therefore that's why we are left with that.
In the near future it's meant to be a patch that emulates also but not much is on the street about that.
It's a ps3 for a reason. To sell ps3 games. Not ps2 games
Why the Feck would sony be bothered about the oh so small market who are purchasing ps2 games when they can focus their developments on 1st party games for the playstation 3. Look at frikking GT5. You seen any other game that looks as amazing? Didn't think so...
Xbox360 is nothing.

what production costs are involved in software emulation?
its just some code so its no more costly than the firmware updates/coding
as for your rational of it being a ps3
well why was the ps2 backwards compatible
why is the ps3 BC with the ps1 then????
if you cant remove those fanboy glasses maybe i'll just remove all and any posts from you in this section :chin:

Production of emulation software and implicating it into systems = Time and thus money
And I'm no gaming expert but I reckon it's a tiny bit harder than just entering coding into the software.
The Ps2 is backwards compatible because at that time Psone games were still pretty big and they released a lot of Ps1 games the same as on the Ps2.
For example. What game have you recently bought on the Xbox360/PS3 that you can purchase for the PS2/Xbox? Not many. It's a completely different generation now. People are becoming acustomed to this new "Next Gen".

The PS3 is compatible with PS1 titles because, If you have checked the playstation store, there are many PS1 titles or "classics" to download for a mere £3.99. Such as Crash bandicoot, spyro etc.
Hope that doesn't seem too fanboyism.

I don't really want to fuel a fire here, but think something needs clearing up.

The PS2 is the best selling console of all time. At PS2 release, the PSOne was second to the Gameboy, and remains there now. To say only a small proportion of gamers buy PS2 games is totally inaccurate.

It's quite reasonable to wonder why they took out the backwards compatability. I'd rather have that than Blu-ray, as I'd spent a fortune on PS2 games over the years. Although I waited and got a 60gb when one was traded in.

exactly my point
theres no good reason not to have PS2 BC than that the hardware/software isnt capable of doing it
removing the hardware i accept as its a cost
not having software emulation makes no sense given they had it upon removing hardware BC then removed it

given Sony touted the PS3 as the one 'box' to have under the telly for gaming/media
i dont get why they removed it.the launch PS3 had impressive specs for media playback/connectivity and what is on the market now seems somewhat dumbed down IMO
on the 360 i tried a few old xbox games in it for a bit of a novelty so in the 360 it didnt really bother me but i suppose if i didnt still have the xbox 1's for xbox media centre then it would be a different matter.
however my OH would like to play her old singstar games and having another console under the TV isnt a great option
it means swapping plugs/cables around and is a PITA

Why is it that when you rant about something bad about the ps3 that it's fine with everyone
But yet when I do the same. Everyone goes mad?
I don't understand it
Your complaining about a flaw with the system. So am I..

this isnt a rant about something bad
its a comment worthy of an 8 year old
