360 "Overheating"

Damn thing's outside of it's warranty so I've had a crack at taking it apart to see if I can figure the issue. I bought it 2nd hand (ex-display) and it worked fine at first but had occasional issues overheating, so I got one of those triple-fan jobs that clip on the back. All good, no issues until today.

Switch it on & straight to 2 red lights (overheating), doesn't even get as far as the menu or anything. Having taken it apart there was hardly a speck of dust, the fans seem to be moving OK (both internal and the 3rd party cooler) there are no obvious signs of blown transistors/resistors!

Now I only recently connected it to X-Box live and downloaded the latest software (given that I needed a 30m cable to do it and it trails all over the place it's not practical to have it connected permanently). Is there anything you can download onto say a USB stick to flash the built in OS back to standard in case that's what's gubbed it?

The 3rd party cooler - where it plugs onto the power side of the xbox are the terminals ok ? as some are known to cause probs like this.

Re: 360 "Overheating"

I'm an avid gamer. High member of ps3forums.com and know my stuff.
I know the fist thing you NEED to do would be to throw that crappy pile of crap cooler away, sell it to some unsuspecting victim. All it does it clog up the way the xbox360 cools itself down. M$ created the internal parts and worked the fans so that they would cool down themselves with no extra help.

For your problem, I think your problem lies in with the hardware. Even though it may not be visual, your board is most likely fried
As obviously, a ps3 gamer i'm not too used to the xbox360 however when I did have one. Mine got the Video display error where it wouldn't show anything RGB or RCA so I rang M$ and told them that I actually had the 3 red rings of death in which my warranty shot straight up to 3 years rather than the standard 1 year. Even though it was a white lie they replaced it. I know you have taken your xbox apart but if you can see any visual damage to where you have taken it apart then you should be fine. Hope this helps.

When you say "terminals" do you mean the metal pins on the power socket itself? In which case yes

@ karbine - There don't appear to be any scorch marks or anything like that on the board itself but chances are if it's the temp sensor that's bit the bullet, it'd be under the CPU anyway and thus invisible. For sure, I could probably contact M$ tech support and lie my ass off but since it's open figured I'd see if there was any way - if it's not a software issue - to maybe bypass the temp checks as I know fine well it's not overheating, even if I have to leave it out of it's fancy plastic shell (Which tbf, it looks pretty awesome sitting here all naked )
