If your into fun games then yes, get a wii.
If you are a serious gamer who doesnt play online, get an xbox 360.
If you are a serious gamer who does want to play online, get a ps3.

Out of the two 'Serious' consoles I'd go 360 for cheaper starting price, better selection of games, and better online play. The wii is a good party machine, but a bit lacking if you are spend a lot of time playing single player games.

360 has the cheaper starting price but then factor in other things:

xbox360 premium - £200
Wireless adaptor - £60
xbox live subscription - £40

Thats £300 with which you could get a ps3 then factor in the cost of a headset for the xbox and the ps3 works out as the cheaper option.

The only thing the xbox has going for it is xbox live, which is much better than the PSN at the moment, but Home should run it close!

And I have Wii and PS3. But have played on 360s quite a bit

also on these posts i think everyone should post what they own ;)

I have:

  • Atari 2600 consoles (one boxed and about three others), with controllers and about 100 games.
  • Intellivision console (x2 - both faulty) and about 30 games
  • A very old black and white video game (bat and ball kind of thing)
  • XBOX (original) with 8 games. I only got it to play Oddworld

I also have a number of console/ game emulators on my PC too ;)

I own a 360, with HD player it all works well. I also own a wii. I believe with the Wii, if you dont have that extra controller to play with friends with it does become quite boring, watching people take turns. But if you have that extra control you can play 2player games.
The wiifit is a good addon for the Wii, very fun.

A friend owns a 360 and a ps3 and his opinon the ps3 is a better alrounder but lacks online play. The 360 beats it in that area.

The only thing that annoys me about the 360 is the noise the dvd drive makes. Does my head in.

I have an older one (2006) and the noise is terrrible. two friends of mine have just bought 360's. An Elite and Pro and the noise as you say is alot better, still not silent like the ps3. But better. I did think of takin my xbox to game and upgrading but then i saw over at xbox forums that the elite can still suffer from RROD. So that has put me of.

I did wonder if i should get a ps3, but without playing one with various games i not sure yet. (ive never liked the playstation control), also all my game titles are xbox only..!!

Think you may have got confused....with a 360 you get a free headset...in the box unlike sony who don't supply you with one so you've got to hope your bluetooth for you phone is compatible or splurge 35 quid for one...also no PS3 is capable of HD out of the box as sony is too cheap to provide an HDMI cable and you have to make do with the cable off a ps2 which isn't HD ready...Oh and back to back they take longer to load the same games and you have to install games on them too...which is a pain in the a**e

In case you hadn't guessed I own a 360 and I formally had a wii but it got traded in...
