Talk to me about: Gran Turismo

I'm in the middle of writing an article about Gran Turismo, and would appreciate your thoughts on every/any iteration in the series, note that in replying to this topic that you don't mind being quoted in the article.

Fire away...

Re: Talk to me about: Gran Turismo

Don't really know what to say except I love every one thats come out and wasted many hours of my life playing it. Yes I'm the sad bugger that did all the endurance races. It's best to take turns do 5 laps at a time with a friend and some cans of lager .

Another thing I love about the series is how vast the range of cars are and how many cars their are to choose from I also like the ability to fully customise the cars performance parts (suspension camber, anti roll bars, ride height etc) all of these variations effect the cars handling as they would in real life .

Re: Talk to me about: Gran Turismo

i remember finding GT3 A-spec not particularly good. it seemed more like a prelude to GT4 than a standalone game.
the cars handling has changed from the original to GT4, and also the demo for GT5. in the first one you could get round tracks quickest by just sliding your way around, but in most cases that wastes time in the later ones.
the licenses for manufacturers has changed a lot. with it becoming more popular more vehicles have become available. Ferrari are in the demo and going to be in GT5. which is a new addition. They are a notable example but it seems to appeal to manufactures due to its popularity.

Re: Talk to me about: Gran Turismo

the best part of the games for me are the huge amount of options when tuning, and also the vast amount of cars from hot hatches to the big supercars. I also found that the more down to earth cars such as the hot hatches etc.. were far more fun to drive and I enjoyed tuning these cars more.

Re: Talk to me about: Gran Turismo

I find Gran Turismo a bit sterile to be honest. I never feel like I'm racing against people, rather computers driving in pre-determined routes.

Also the lack of realistic damage is a severe low point in terms of making it the ultimate driving simulation. It means that I'm not worried about scratching 'owt, or bouncing off stuff

And some of the extras seem a bit gimmicky, like the addition of wings, completely at odds with the fact that you cant visually modify your vehicle bar the wheels which makes it look daft. Another sidebit on the wings is that suddenly you've got downforce capability on the whole car, when nothing else has been added (eg the front has no spoiler, so how come I can now adjust the downforce? )

also, the whole washing stuff? Just why bother? If you have little money, washing your car is a frivilous luxury you wont bother with, and if your loaded you've most likely got so many cars that it doesnt matter. Added to the fact that the dirt just makes the cars dull, and that you can only see it in replays.

GT is a game to marvel at because of the engineering involved in making something to extraordinary detail, whereas if I want fun I'll go play CMR or something

Re: Talk to me about: Gran Turismo

Agree with Serin
  • Game is too slow, the speed is so unrealistic.
  • AI is poor. No challenging driving, No agression, No overtaking.
  • Multiplayer is boring and gets boring quick - Too slow, No Computer AI to add to the challenge.
  • Visually Could be better. Vehicle damage could and should be added.
  • Audio I found really annoying. Music was poor and Tyre screech was like none I have ever heard before.
  • Vehicle tuning could be better explained.

Good game to look at but I'd give it 2 out of 5 stars.

Re: Talk to me about: Gran Turismo

all the GT games were class., even though it was sh*t the way there was no damage, there was a load of things that could and should have been better but there was nothing like it at the time. i still have every game and i play them from time to time. its funny when you go back and play the first one, you dont remember it being so pixelated.,lol

Re: Talk to me about: Gran Turismo

GT1 was class, quite a groundbreaking game at the time but I never really played any of the later games. GT4 is suppose to be great, GT5 should be superb too. Good luck with the article, writing about a computer game must be quite tough.

i liked GT4 but to be honest it wasnt really any better than GT3 A-spec, it was kinda like a facelifted version, someone mentioned a spec being one of the worst, not a chance, it was the best imo., maybe they meant GT prologue, that wasnt the best, was pretty limited.,

Re: Talk to me about: Gran Turismo

Thanks for the feedback guys.

My thoughts:

GT - An incredible first go from Polyphony, and a very important part of racing game history.
GT2 - Took all of GT1's strengths and made many, many more of them, so many decent manufacturers, new tracks, a colossal game which laster for years.
GT3 - Content wise perhaps limited (when weighed up against other iterations) but had a fantastic physics balance between fun and reality, and looked absolutely stunning. First decent PS2 game.
GT4 - Slightly less intuitive physics but very rewarding when you got it right, like GT2 maxed out the content but also features the most thrilling digital Nurburgring Nordschleife around. By this point though the AI and engine sounds start to become a concern, but looking at GT5 Prologue the AI is much better (and there's 16 cars on track!) and the sound is up to scratch too. Also has beautifully lit, outstandingly detailed interiors.

Can't wait.

And still no damage...And Sony can't still use the 'manufacturers won't allow it' excuse as other games do it!

You bet your ass... Just look at Colin mcrae Dirt and Juiced 2 you can completely wreck your car. On CM Dirt ive managed to loose 2 wheels most of my body panels and run on a knackered engine with 2 gears left to use its brilliant .

And just to add something else I only bought a PS1 and PS2 for the GT games and I wasn't disappointed but from what ive seen and read there is no way I'll buy a PS3 especially just for GT5. Think i'll stick to my Xbox360 thanks, blu ray is ghey anyway.
