Blu-ray title suffers coating rot?

A thread over at AVS Forum has been running for weeks now, discussing what many have discovered; "Blu-ray disc rot". Some users are reporting finding small spots on their discs that render them unplayable, particularly with "The Prestige". However, as it usually goes, many other users are reporting that their discs are still working correctly and do not show the dreaded signs of rot.

It's impossible to use a forum to judge how widespread a problem really is, but in the past, forum posts have lead to product recalls. If you check your Blu-ray titles now and find that the data side seems to be showing signs of rot (picture below), you should seek a refund or replacement disc immediately.

and yet another blow to sony., they really aint having any luck lately huh.,lol
could this be related to cleaning agents some people are using to clean the discs?

Not really, more of a production problem at the place of manufacture (Not Sony). It would appear that a contaniment got into the production process of a batch of bluray films, I have seen the list of films effected, but forget which ones they were.

on the flip side, blockbusters have gone blue ray only

Only the US stores only, you can still get HD DVD online and mail order though. But with only Universal being the only big film maker backing HD DVD its only a matter of time.

Could we be witnessing Sony inventing a new format and it succeeding.

you use the word "only" a lot.,lol., also its a bit early to say sony will out do the HD DVD at this early stage. i would have bought the PS3 by now if they had launched it with proper games like they did at M$ when launching the 360 and the original xbox but im really being put off by silly things that they have messes up, firsty they should have gone for a new controller design instead of trying to stay "authentic" to the playstation brand. it simpply doesnt work with triggers on it.
i played the F1 game last week on it and i was using a redbull car iirc and was last but was still able to bring the car up in the top 5 in the space of a few laps? that in particular is a really bad game but im hoping some of the old sony classics can save it. GT5 will be one game that would seriously make me concider a PS3 but going on what has been said about it so far it doesnt sound all that interesting, ive heard that there will be no damage in the game which i find stupid for the so called "real driving simulator" but i suppose that could be all rumour so i look forward to hearing more about it in the future. resident evil would be another great one if they could somehow make it like they did the originals where it was a genuinely scary game to play. GTA5 is another one but that will be out on 360 believe?

well theres a small fly in the blueray ointment.the new blueray specifications coming in in october will leave a lot of 1st generation players defunct.
meaning they cannot access the new features, not very consumer friendly when you consider what these machines must have cost

Bravia TFTs are certainly one of the best TVs and the Vaio laptops offer some impressive features.

A joke they are not.
i cant argue as far as the TV's are concerned but the Vaio laptops are complete sh*t., they do make them very small and very nice looking but they are too delicate and on a friends one the battery died and then the screen went funny shortly after, then theres famous sony attitude where its alwats the customers fault..,
also when you take into concideration the difference in pricing of sony TVs and laptops compared to other brands they are a complete joke. im buying my 3rd HP laptop in a few weeks and couldnt be more impressed with them but i wouldnt go sony again as far as they are concerned.,

from my personal experience Sony have been very helpful when my psp messed up. no blame placed on me at all. and they were extremely quick and helpful in sorting out a replacement to be given to me the next day. though that's the only experience i've had with sony.

Off topic,,

ONLY :D :D

On topic, not too fussed about these new Blu Ray features (Something to do with Java I think!!) as I only ever watchthe movie and never bother with any of the special features, thats why I allways buy the bog standard DVD and never bother with the special editions.

maybe so but your bog standard player can access the bulk of the special features.
little poor for customers given the relativly short release time
