Yeh I know its now considered old, but the PS2 is seizing up and freezes at random, which is extremely annoying. Can hear the CD inside churning and sounds like its in pain.

Time to get a PS3?

TBH its most likely a worn dvd drive.ps2's dual lazer set up wears quite quickly.
is the cooling fan running?

The console is about 3.5 years old and gathers a lot of dust - I think the fan is running - my feeling is dust being built up inside..

it could be, but it sounds like what happened to mine, when the laser wasnt aligning itself properly. If you give sony a ring they will swap it for a refurbed machine for about 50 quid.

you tried cleaning the lazer?

open it up get a cotton bud and GENTLY go over the lens of the lazer if you can get it use isopropanol if not nail varnish remover will do the job but use a clean bud after

The bugger no longer loads any games (just freezes) now so yep will have to open it up and give it a clean :)

Ok, took the thing apart, and to expectation it was covered in dust, but surprisingly the lens was pretty clean. Cleaned it up with a paintbrush, put it back together, and now it at least loads games. But something weird is with the graphics - a lot of times it just doesn't load properly. And also the disk spins quite loudly as well..

Before I cleaned it it plays DVD movies no problems though

Hmm.. maybe not.. most games either don't load or don't load properly :(

Oh well, just use it as a DVD player then

Are the games you're trying on actual DVD-ROMs or normal blue CDs?

I'd wait for the PS3 price to drop first, don't know about you but none of the currently released games interest me. Need GT4 and MGS4 (y)

I don't know - they're just off-the-shelves - which ones are they?

Yeh the price is quite ludicrous.. might as well spend the $ on something worthwhile like shares, another degree etc etc.
