Asking for my Dad.

The glass on his front fog light got broken a wee while back but it's been left as it passed its MOT. The bulb has now broken and he's been told the unit has to be replaced. He's sourced a cheap unit and is considering replacing it himself if it's fairly straight forward as he's retired and has the time to do it. However if it's a faff it'd be better off going to the garage. So, do you think he can change it himself and are there any instructions?

Car's a 2007-reg 150 mjet

Thanks for any advice

Generally, it SHOULD be an easy job but Modern cars when it comes to anything around the front end are a faff. If it's not got crash protection of some sort blocking access, it will have plastic around it to help aerodynamic efficency. SO rather than pushing it out, it'd be a case of removing undertrays, spat guards (bolts always siezed), foam, braces etc just to get near the damn thing.

If he has the unit already to replace it, have a look at that, does it have bolt holes or just clips? if it's just clips, tbh i'd smash the rest of what's left of the old one out and pull the remains out from the front, plug the new one in and press on. But if it has bolts (and given it's modern, i'll bet it will...just to be a pain) then i'd have a quick look at how the undertray and spats were held on.

The job itself would be easy, access will be the only potential issue.

Cheers Mark, I'll tell him what to look for in the new unit and let him take it from there. He doesn't have axle stands or owt so if required it will probably be cheaper to go to the garage - it's a local, friendly garage btw :)

I'd look in the handbook at how you replace a bulb on it too and have a feel about in the hole that way, you can get an idea how access will be, wether you can get tools in whatever access there for bulb changing etc. There might be a cheat to get it out.

Reading that post back, the more dirty minded of us will see it in the wrong way

Turns out it's bolts and as he has mobility issues thanks to smashing one of his knee caps 15 years back it'll go to the garage to get the unit replaced. Thanks for the advice though
