Doblo NOT Starting

Doblo NOT Starting

Right before anyone says anything, I DON'T have a Doblo, but my Mum does.

Ok so my mum rang me about 8:30 saying that her car had died, thankfully she was in the village, delivering Avon orders.

So I went up & tried the igntion, I got normall igntion lights, but when I turned the key to crank the engine, it died.

I connected the Jump Leads up to her Doblo from Dubster, again, ignition worked, but would not crank.

My suspicion is the Alternator, going from a previous experience with my Seicento about 2years ago.

My Step-dad went up about 10 with my mum to see if they could start or tow the car.

Mum rang me at 10:25 asking me to come up to help push her car, as owing to the fact that she was parked facing down the slope on Brewlands drive, we would just push the car home (about 5mins walk).

We managed to bump start it just before the end of Brewlands Drive so my Mum could get it home onto the drive.

My Step-dad switched it off when he got back & then couldn't get it to crank, & he rekons it's the battery.

Mk1 Doblo 1.9JTD Dynmaic 93k on the clock, 05plate, original battery & original Alternator.

as said on FB, i reckon the batterys fried internally, might be due to old age, might be due to the alternator overcharging and cooking the battery

id test with another battery then slap a multimeter on it to see what the alternator is doing

if the batterys fried it wont charge, it has to have overcharged or be dead with age, if the alternator had not been charging the battery, the battery light would have been on for a while before it died

Right update.
Step-dad left if on charge overnight, unplugged it all this morning & was able to start the Doblo first time.
He repated it twice to check.

I've phoned Bridgend to get a price for the battery & Alternator, but may not hear back untill Monday morning.

Apparently the Alternaotr belt is shiny at the top as is the adjuster.
Both Alternator & Timing Belt were replaced in April, but neither Battery or Alternator have been replaced.

dont just jump to buying a new alternator...

with the engine running put a multi meter on the battery terminals and report back...

aslong as its within tolerance the battery has probably just died and there is nothing wrong with the alt

Andi, it sounds exactly like what happened to the Stilo, which you were there to witness - swapped my dead battery for that tiny Pug 106 one and it fired up first time. As Steve says, don't be so hasty to change the alternator as a new one especially costs double what the battery would sometimes.

You have to check the charging volts with a Multimeter (D.C. Votls) with the engine running, should be in the region of 13v to a max of 14v and maintain 12.5v + with headlights on. Also it could be a dodgy battery, and the healthy alternator is feeding a internal battery fault, thus colapsing the terminal voltage. Change battery with a known good battery and repeat charging voltage test.

Right update.
So mum used it yesterday, started first time, didn't die.
Apparently the Aletrnator belt is very shiny, which my Step-dad belives is the tensioner??? he reckons the belt has been slipping?? didn't know about that.

Both Alternator & Timing belt were changed in March this year by Bridgend....

So await phonecall tomorrow with price for Battery.

Right, car worked for a bit today.

Mum got home & swithced off, it won't start now.

Halfords are too expencive for the battery as are National Tyres.

Not sure what he is going to do, I'm hoping Bridgend phone before I go out.
Might give Farmer Autocare Hillington a ring see what sort of price they want & if they have a Battery in stock.
Likewise I think Step-dad is going to Ring TMS either Killie or Ayr.

diesel batterys are cheap... tbh anything under 100 is ok for a battery for the amount of lead and refining they need... seems like its pay up or walk time.

or go a scrappy. £10 a battery usually, but it can be false economy.
