Picking up a new site/project motor on Friday :D

A few of the team know what this is, it's a bit different...and it's got the word Sporting in it :)

Those who do know - lets not spoil the surprise? Will be doing the grand unveiling at the BBQ on Saturday!

Site car pictures

As promised here are some pictures of the site car

The first is from down in Livingston. We were much later getting there than planned thanks to Aberdeen traffic and the knock-on effect of hitting further traffic in Dundee and the Forth Road Bridge. The seller had gone out for food arranging for us to meet him at a retail park instead of his house. His comment was you can't miss the car and he was right - well at least as far as Mark was concerned as neither Martyn or I saw it and god knows why as you can see

One of the criteria on the site car was that it had to be head-turning and I'd say it certainly is. Some random person was taking a photo of it when we arrived lol. Here's the front

As you can see from the stickers the car was used in a banger rally and had some interesting additions one that you can see in the top picture if you look closely. There are some problems with the car of course as is to be expected however we weren't expecting a blown exhaust which made sure people heard as well as saw it coming

Anyway, transaction completed we headed to asda to get some food and that's when we discovered the car doesn't like speed bumps much. Actually it doesn't like bumps in it's current state at all but that's not surprising considering how low it's sitting. This is one car that definitely does not need lowered

Once we'd worked out an exit strategy from asda that didn't involve speed bumps we headed north again to Kirkcaldy to pay a visit to Venters and Neeny. It was rush hour on a Friday afternoon when most people are usually more than a little grumpy and yet the car attracted nothing but positive reactions despite trundling along at only 50 mph (when not stuck in a queue that is). Very few failed to notice the car and a lot of people waved resulting in some enthusiastic horn tooting from the boys. thank **** they hadn't found the alarm at that point is all I can say - more of that later.

The paintwork ain't great so it was easy to remove some of the stickers in asda - selectively. I believe it travelled up the M90 with the right hand side saying Monte Carlo or Bus. Once we got to Kirkcaldy we set about adding some of our own

Getting better :D

Remember I said it was great at attracting attention? Well heading out of Kirkcaldy I was amused to see some bloke almost fall off the pavement doing a double take at the car

The grand unveiling was at today's bbq after which there was a mini fix-it meet with Ransoman, lewisp, msb89 and Martyn. Shocks had been picked up in the morning and there was a trip to Persley following the bbq to acquire springs and other stuff. The car is so low the paving stone rule came into play

No idea how they got on as I legged it once it became apparent I was no longer needed so hopefully someone else will update soon

Haha awesome day, really had a good laugh :)

unfortunately after the exhaust came off, that was about all that got done to the car, as they couldn't properly access the underneath to change parts, and Ransoman had to leave us, so it currently sits till next week when parts and time allow again.

I'll pick up - we never did get springs at Persly. So far today was a case of remove, remove, remove.

We've got a replacement exhaust, so that's a good starting point.

The snapped exhaust is now off of the FS mobile (we need a name for this thing!) and lying in the scrap pile at Ransomans. Finally there is a stereo in the car and the N/S wing mirror has been swapped over for a Cinq mirror. The original mirror glass was covered in what I can only assume are sparks/bits of weld. Not a huge fan of the Sei mirrors anyway. So yeh, thanks to @Mrcento for the replacements :)

So far we've:

Removed most of the decals (sunstrip is next, but that needs tar and glue remover to remove residue)
Removed the broken exhaust
Sourced a stereo for her (woo hoo)
Released Barbie from captivity.
Un-tinted the front head lights and removed the painted on brows.

Now, we've standard shocks sat in the motor ready for fitting. Plan is to replace the rear suspension as-standard, so we can remove the car from Westhill. Just now the whole noddy/bouncing thing is getting a bit old hat. Monday/Tuesday we'll hopefully do this, along with fitting the replacement exhaust. Then we can look seriously at what this will need for its MOT.

Longer term we want to use this as the basis for fix it meets and get as many members as possible involved - whether it's helping decide on its new colour, or lending a hand with repairs, we want you ALL involved :)

It's the sites 10th Birthday next year and we'd like to use this as a show/storage vehicle, something we can use to get some attention for the site. I'm sure it's already gained us at least one new member, when I stopped in past the new place some of the neighbours noticed our small Fiat meet...

Nah that was me realising that one of the most interesting features of the car wasn't really visible in any of the photos. lol

I like to make 'em work [attachment=1:1sabzi1j]wink.gif[/attachment:1sabzi1j]

Picking up on the project Sei again tomorrow. :)

With new shocks already picked up, springs will be collected tomorrow. The plan tomorrow/Tuesday night is to get the car running 100% and out of Westhill. It should have been going into storage this weekend but we've delayed that until the first repairs are carried out.

So the Monday/Tuesday night 'to do' list

  • Replace rear springs and shocks[/*:m:3aakgh1a]
  • Fit replacement exhaust[/*:m:3aakgh1a]
  • Fit o/s Cinquecento wing mirror[/*:m:3aakgh1a]
  • Fit stereo[/*:m:3aakgh1a]

At that point the car shall be moved until the next fit it meet/pre MOT test.

Let me set the scene

Sorry for the slightly shaky picture but it's cold

Anyway, it's Monday evening, we have springs, shocks and the replacement exhaust. No handbrake cable but it's on the list.

Martyn and Ransoman are hard at work on the car and I'm perched on a wooden seat on the road watching them work and typing this. My aim is to post updates throughout the evening so keeping checking back.

It's 18:55, the car is almost jacked and the wheels are coming off. More later

19:10 - rear N/S wheel is off and no tools required to remove the spring

You're probably not surprised judging by the height and stance of the car

Old vs new springs

No probs mate, we'll probably be taking it just south of the border at some point for @m5haw to work his magic so you're welcome to join us for that if you wish

Update 19:33: Still removing the top shock bolt, lots of swearing involved but no blood injuries yet. That's some progress I suppose

Apparently almost there, but slight delay as the boys compare scars

19:45 - apparently the rear trailing arm has an imprint of the wire protector of the handbrake cable which is not good.

btw, are you all impressed with my use of technical terms? To be fair Andrew is dictating them to me lol

Further update, Andrew has lost all feeling in his right arm - that's probably not good. However the N/S is now ready for the rebuild. More photos to follow of the knackered shock absorbers

20:10

Photo time

One empty wheel arch - the wheel is positioned there just in case so I'm told

Old shock absorber - how this passed an MOT we have no idea

New shock is on and Andrew is now compressing the spring

We're nearing the end of the fix-it session for tonight but progress has been made. Here are some more photies

That apparently hurt big time

Getting the jack under

20130805_203640.jpg

Discovered the guy bent the bit where the damper bolts on to as he didn't have any washers. This is not good

Ach well, challenges are what we thrive on :D

22:30
My last edit of the evening and 2 final pictures. Rain, dying light and Andrew's need to go pick up his 3-month old puppy stopped play but we're all happy with the progress. We've uncovered some new problems and Martyn will be putting up a request soon for help but we do now have the passenger side rear shocks and spring replaced. It makes a huge difference too

Wheel back on and there's now lots of space between the arch and the wheel

I genuinely lol'd when I saw this

So, progress has been made on Project FS but not enough to move it from it's current place to where we will be storing it. Another fix it meet will be held tomorrow night and any bods willing to come along and lend a hand will be very welcome. It's taking place in Westhill and if you're interested PM myself or Martyn and we'll give you instructions on how to get there

Oh and rumour has it there may be pizza as it's 2-for-1 at Domino's on a Tuesday :D

Nackered.com.

So yeh, progress. N/S rear suspension now looks like it may work :D Tomorrow we do the O/S which I'm told isn't nearly as badly ****ed. So Tuesdays plan is to fix that, attached the new exhaust and - if there's time - do some new brake pipes.

Key job of the night will no doubt be fixing the new stereo in place. Gotta get some music on the go :)

As well as the above list of work I also managed a little bit more de-stickering. So a bit of tar and glue to remove the left over residue and most traces of the cars former owner/life shall be gone. Just to get rid of some of that bloody pink now...

Those attending tonight - hopefully you all remember where you're heading?

I should be there for around 6.30pm. Pizza will be arranged as well for some point during the evening. It's 2 for Tuesday so at least one will be BBQ chicken, the other well who knows :)
