we havent tested it against vtec yet :D my sneaking suspicion is lift on vvtl-i feels more agressive when it kicks in because theres a bigger jump in the power band, more at the top but a bit less low down torque just before it kicks in, giving that proper "jesus christ, i wasn't expecting that" surge

vtecs torque curve i believe is smoother, the trade off of not having quite as big a kick in the back when it activates is having a bit more low down before it activates, meaning you do still get a surge, but it's more evenly spread...... the end result is nigh on identical performance wise but it's just achieved a slightly different way.....if that makes sense :D

I updated the X fuelly today, fairly respectable 30.9mpg, but need to sort out the cinq's fuelly, currently 40.7mpg :)

Only driven one Toyota - my Dad's '02 Yaris and the VVT-i in that, there is a noticeable jump when you hit the right range. Granted, it's just a 1-litre, but it does rather enjoy being revved the nuts off of. Though not sure if that's why it's in such a sorry state as that's pretty much how my Dad drives it

Wouldn't like to guess what the Stilo does, it's probably far lower than the 45 odd mpg they quote as the combined figure if memory serves - induction's too addictive ;)

Just get a vtec controller and set it to what ever u want.

Be hard to believe there exist a factory tune engine that is more agressive than the B series when it comes on cam. Good for for a wee run.

you cant fiddle with the lift in these engines the ecu is fully locked so only 2 options im aware of exist which is new ecu which is unlocked and a piece of kit which is 1000 bucks :D which im not that interested in :D

i only said aggressive as me and mark had this conversation about how hard the lift hits because if you read the post mark put up you see what i mean because the vtec kicks in much lower down the rev range it doesnt hit as hard because its still pulling well but the lift kicks in at a much higher point in the rev range when the engine starts to loose power and makes it feel much more aggressive it gives a nice dose of whiplash :D

I believe (well mine did) from factor the SIR vtec kicks in at 5400, which i thought was pretty high up.

I always thought the VVTI was much more progressive being a newer technology compared to the B series?

yeah mine kicks on at 5400 aswell, i think the vvtli is slightly later, about 5.6k? its the power spread though thats different, like (just example figures, only the peaks are accurate)

b16 off vtec, 5200rpm-110bhp, on vtec at 5400 you'll get a surge to 155bhp as soon as the cam hits and it'll peak at about 167bhp in sir spec at about 7800-8000rpm.

on the vvtli (bearing in mind it's a 1.8 rather than 1.6) at about 5200rpm-5300 rpm it'll be about 110bhp aswell like the b16, but when lift cuts in it will hit 175bhp and peak at 190bhp later on, so rather than the 45bhp surge, you get a 65bhp surge. that makes it feel more agressive but it's just because more of the power is higher in the rev band, it's not that it's more agressive than the b16, it's just where the power has been positioned due to the fact off cam, it's less aggressive.

proprtionally, more of its power is high up than the b16, so what they produce is similar, but they just produce it at different points for the same effect.

the reviews of the vvtli engine back this up actually, most seem to say it lacks torque low down (same criticisim directed at vtec engines), however because of how it delivers it, it makes the vtecs feel torquier throughout, heres evo's verdict actually..

basicly, both peaches of engines that deliver plenty punch the same way, both just have different delivery points
