It's a young guy's first day in prison, and he is really uncomfortable about his new surroundings.
As he goes to chow that first morning, everyone is seated at long tables, quietly eating breakfast.
Suddenly, someone leaps up on the table, and shouts ..." 429 ! "
All the prisoners begin to roar with laughter, and this lasts about 5 minutes.
The new guy has no idea what is happening, but desperately trying to fit in, he also laughs out loud.
Then, later, at lunch, all is quiet until some other guy jumps up and yells ........." 137 !"
Once again, everyone howls with laughter, and although still puzzled, so does the new guy.
Back in his cell, he asks his cellmate "What's going on with this number business????"
"Oh, that ! " the guy says. " There's a joke book in the prison library, called "1001 Jokes", and it's been circulated so many times that just calling out a number brings to mind a joke ! "
So the young guy goes to the prison library to get the book, but it has been checked out, and is not there.
Despite not getting the book, and still wanting to be part of the "in crowd",
that night at supper the young guy stands up on the table and shouts ......"212!" There is not a peep from anybody !
Embarrassed, he tries again and randomly yells.. "692!"..... Again, not even a giggle from anybody !
Now totally confused, he returns to his cell and asks his cellmate why others get howls of laughter, but he can't seem to even receive a chuckle ??????
His cellmate says..."Well, some people just don't know how to tell a joke !"
