ok so has anyone ever messed with voltages or clock speeds runing your computers or is it just me?

back in the day i had a 3.4ghz ht pentium 4 running at a stable 4.7ghz water cooled at 77C max load. so im not a stranger to overclocking..... and when asleep at night whilst torrents are running underclocking to 0.9-1ghz to keep the fans turned off and cpu temps down to 30C.

however ive never had a play with a laptop before........

basicly laptops arnt ment for overclocking due to there inevitable power and temperature issues, so much stuff in a small space ran by a battery....
and underclocking.... really who wants to do that to their pc? i payed for a 2.1 dual core ill use it as so.......

this is where voltage comes in..... basicly their are programs... and a bit of luck out there you can change your voltages running to your cpu... the idea is pretty simple...

the more power going in there the more heat, the more heat the more chance of dropped data and damaged componants.... the less power going there the opposite affect longer life and much lower temperatures... when leaving amd/intel chips are rated to ~ 1.8-2v at full swing. but you can lower this without lowering the speed of your computer... every chip is different and has different tolorences the companys play it safe and go for a known figure to work on all....

ive just dropped mine from 1.8985v to 0.9750 volts and still running at 2.1mhz dual core.. this meaning to run at max speed my chip does not need the 1.8v amd said. it only needs 0.9. as it happens im quite lucky and very very few safely run to this level. most run down to 1.2-1.3 instead but still thats a massive save in power. on system idel ive also reduced it from 0.850v to 0.750v (not much to be saved low down) and its still all running to speed and safe... any lower and its not stable and crashes so its trial and error to get the right settings. basicly my battery now runs for 4 hours rather than 3 and my laptop temperature runs 41 on idol and 74 max load (compared to 62 idol and 87 max a good 10C cooler and 20C cooler under normal running. at 41 its just above body temp so feels warm not hot when used.) so its cooler on your lap... still as quick and longer battery life!!!!

so simply.. or not if you have read this far. anyone out there with a laptop interested in this? it works on desktops too but i imagine not many people are arsed about desktop temps ... mabee just noise

The lad at work is right into this, iirc 2 maybe 3 of 5 the work pc's are overcocked to gain performance using AutoCAD, Civil3D etc

Under clocking a laptop certainly sounds good idea an could be a good thing to try out on our wee netbook as I'd imagine the principles are the same.

the new comp i built is running water cooled at 14ghz at the moment at 35oC with the fan running at 600rpm so no noise whatsoever :D its great :D

abyss what setup you got to pull them figures? quad core? or single? just wondering how you calculated that total :)

and rich you dont want to underclock the laptop really. their already slow enough you want to undervault it. it doesnt slow the speed just lowers the voltage going to the cpu to the minimum it can take and still work... as i said their all different but its well worth it. well cooler, more life and i suppose if you sorted the voltage you could overclock it and have it running standard temps and all would be well...

if your interested i could give it ago for you rich?

desktops are king :D i friking hate laptops not worth the money no matter what anyone says and how useful they are lol

used to build kick ass set upts but because a student so got a lappy for uni... never looked back. i dont really game anymore and with a few tweeks you can still get a fair kick out of some of them.

bang for buck its always a desktop though. just like the ability to be in my sofa on the pc lol

im tempted to splash out on a new custom build... but im unsure. not really got the spare cash.

laptops are great for things like working anywhere but the desk lol

to be honest my computer is a powerhouse and didnt cost me much

amd phenom II x2 (unlocked the hidden cores to make it a quad core) 3ghz up to 3.5ghz each core - got for £50
8gb ddr3 - got for £80
2tb hard drives - £40 each 1tb drive
ati radeon HD6850 1gb ddr5 - this was the most expensive as its the newest chipset released in november - £140
and water cooling cpu system -£35
Xfire motherboard was £40 also
hiper typer modular PSU 680w -£25

now for the power i have got thats not a expensive system and im sitting on the couch on a full HD 40" monitor :D so not really a desktop either

yeh. cant take it upstairs to watch a movie in bed though... mpy laptop is full hd with a hdmi output for any tv :) win win...

also 3.5ghz quad core isnt 14mhz you dont add em togeather lol. but its still quick. i got a 3.2 quad at home on my desktop beast lol.

laptop is nearly a year old but was brand new at the time.

2.1ghz dual core amd m320
250gb hdd
4gb ram
ati radeon HD 5200.

tbh it plays anything i ask it too. so no complaints and it was student price :) discounts ftw.

prefere desktops for power stations but there are good laptops out there dell xps apart from the price are performance monsters.

hmmm... lol.

seriously though anyone interested in undervaulting definatly do it. its worth it on both laptops and desktops... it lowers temps and power consumption and it lengthens life of componants.

i know you dont add em together and i dont have a tv in my bed as i do other things in the bedroom :D

Never under clocked one before but my current desktop has the Intel E8600 which was the best out when I built the system over 2 years ago. Standard its 3.33ghz and 1333fsb but with a restart and play in bios it sits at 4ghz and 1600fsb without a problem :D (other people have pushed much further but I am a chicken!)

But since building it I still haven't found a game that has made me want to upgrade :D I have black ops and the new MoH on it without a problem. Not bad for a system over 2 year old!!

got myself a intel core 2 quad dell inspiron. Got it just before the new "I5/7" chipsets were released...bit annoyed with timing :p

Runs fine mostly, however it randomly uses up ram and cpu ""power"" when nothing appears to be running. Photoshop is also surprisingly slow which is the main thing I use on it.

Thinking of overclocking...or whatever, at least do something to make it run smoother. Not a big gamer on it, just use alot of photography programes + 3D design and HD video editing software.

Been out the game. As for overclock or under-clocking .... I take it you checked your BIOS lets you adjust ? IT would be annoying everytime you have to enter to the bios to readjust the voltages.

Why not adjust fan speed instead if you want it make it quite, only if you know the CPU is under light load :) .

MY PC is a totaly **** hole, but as long as i can surf the web and play starcraft 2, i am winning :) . I only clock it to ****, when is near the end of the road :) .

i think everyone is missing what i said here... under VOLTING is not underCLOCKING it does not lower or increase the performance of the chip. simpily lowers it to the correct amount of power it needs to run... some use more, some use less....

it lowers the temps dramaticly and keeps everything running smooth too... so if you wanted to overclock you could run standard temps but a faster clock speed...

everyone should undervolt imo... longer bat life longer curcuit life and less power usage for the exact same results... its win win.
