Sonic Four

Sonic Four

I never had a sega so never really played sonic, unless i was at a mates house :(

Joy! :D

Of course, technically speaking the last proper Sonic game (unless you count all the various system ports like Neo Geo, Gameboy Advance, etc) was Sonic & Knuckles ;) I'm glad that Sega aren't really counting the 3D Sonic games as the majority were, to use a Dominic Diamond phrase, pants. I've still got Sonic 1, 2 and 3 (S&N still eludes me as I want it boxed but pay a fortune for it) and this new one from the brief look does indeed seem to be rather interesting looking.

Guessing they're going the way Street Fighter went and going back to their 2D origins :)

Going back to 2d worked for Mario, so I dont see why this wont! :)

Some games just work better in 2d, regardless of the technology in use. Another good example would be the Worms series. That was an amazing game till they tried to turn it into a 3d platformer thing and it just failed. :(

The first 3d sonic game (sonic adventure for the dc) was absolutley tremendous

every other 3d one ever made was horrendous.

Going 2d again can only be a good thing imo

Anyone got a Mega Drive????

I had:
Sonic the Hedgehog 1
Sonic 2
Sonic 3
Sonic & Knuckles
Sonic 3d which I played in America before it was realesed into the UK Market.

Can't wait for it to come out.

Hmm, yeah had a Megadrive 2 since 1993. Got a Mega CD 5 years ago as well and got 35 MD games and just the 6 CD games including the much sought after Snatcher.

Bought a Sonic Greatest Hits type compilation for the PS2 a while back - has Sonic CD, Sonic 3D (which is pretty poor) and numerous Master System and Game Gear conversions on it. Not bad, though I always prefer to play a game on the proper system.

Steadily building my retro collection - just got a PS2 phase 2 from my sis for my birthday with a fair few games so now have 25 or so PS2 titles. Bought it after finding Outrun 2006 doesn't work on my backwards compatible PS3.

I have to say, what's happening with a few games now is they're finally looking back at older titles to see what the appeal was. They then take this and implement it into a new title with today's technology and programming. It's a great mix when done right, hopefully this new Sonic game will be the same :)

What PS3 you got Rob??
40gb or 60gb??

If it's the 40 then it will ONLY play PS3 games, but if it's the 60gb (The better version!!!!!) then it WILL Play ps1, PS2 & PS3 Games on it.

Martyn!! I had the Megadrive 2, with 1 standard controller and another with buttons like TURBO written on it.

Chrome Halfords letters?

Yeah, it's the 60gb - was one of the first on release and glad I got it as it is indeed the best version :) There's a sheet of compatibility issues on the interwebs somewhere and Outrun 2006 is one that has major issues. Had some issues on Killzone as well (can't zoom in with a sniper rifle for example), but most games I have are fine.

Still, since I've got the PS2 sat on the other side of the TV, there's no issues with that now. Only downfall is that the PS2 doesn't up convert to HD though I've still only got a standard def telly at the minute so not fussed about that.

Do need to get a scart lead for my Mega Drive though but Amazon are doing a Haiti fund the now with them all so that's bumping prices up ridiculously. Or I could do a Buy it Now and spend over £30 on one from Sweden  Plus, apparently the connector's different on the back of the MD1 and MD2 (which I have), which limits me again. Ah the joys of retro gaming :p

Ah yes, the six button controller. Looks like an import picture too, unless Im mistaken!

Wasnt that released to support the 32x or Streetfighter or something?

Well, that controller's just a 3 button one with turbo buttons for rapid fire. Think Competition Pro did a similar one but the turbo buttons were a similar shape to the "start" button. The 6 button layout basically just gave some added flexibility. Games like Street Fighter, Virtua Racing and a fair few others took advantage of it and as you say the 32X took advantage of it too even though it was a terrible console - merely a stop gap before the Saturn came out. I mean, the SNES had 2 shoulder buttons and 4 on the front whereas the standard MD only had the 3 so I think Sega just thought it logical to do that.

Evolutions of the 6 button lead to the Saturn pad of course, but the Dreamcast's pad was of course a radical one to say the least, probably comparable to that of an xBox though the VMU was a rather novel idea. Really quite fancy a Dreamcast to add to my collection :)
