I know this is something that Muppet and myself chat about every now and again, but just wondering what old games consoles everyone has lying around their house?

Currently Ive got:

nes-console.jpg

(still my original, that Ive had nearly 20 years)

Also, a bit less retro but still!

Just bid on Bart vs Space Mutants for the NES. LOVED that game back in the day!

Well, started with this when I was about 6...

...then, even though I wanted a games console, my Dad got me this in 1992...

...but then the following year he caved and got me...

...which I still have. I then got...

...which again I still have. Then in 1995, the next gen came and I got...

...for the princely sum of £260 with one memory card, 2 controllers and Ridge Racer (I still have that game :D ). A year later I got...

Nintendo64.jpg

...which was mainly for GoldenEye64 ;) Still got that too :)

Then in 2003 odd, I got my first...

...but then that was nicked and insurer fools replaced it with...

...which was rubbish in comparison. Traded it in for my wonderous...

...in between, those the Megadrive 2 became...

...which I still have and recently of course I got...

snes.jpg

...now I just need to expand the 70 odd games collection I have till I have a wall of games not just a small bookcase and buy some more systems. Panasonic 3DO or Neo Geo...? :D

Love retro games and playing stuff on the systems they were intended for. Shame so many games are extortionate now and/or in terrible condition but then as I said to Martyn, my games collection though great fun also provides a back up plan if I get financially screwed any time soon :D

The oldest console I own is a PS1 :(

Before we moved (2004/5 ish?) my parents got rid of the SNES for about £20, I had about 50-100 games for it too, bet it would be worth something now!

Who here has a battery eater? ;)

by that, i mean a bit of equpiment that is so overly ambitious for the technology of the time, it's baffling why they bothered making it.

Of course, i am reffering to the sega game gear. 6 batterys an hour in a portable machine that weighs 1.6 times that of an average house brick. great concept, pointless execution! still have mine though ;)

also have a ps1, ps2, xbox, xbox 360, game boy advance, game boy ds, psp. in the past i've also had an N64 and my favourite console of all time, the Sega Dreamcast. best, most advanced ahead of it's time console ever made with the worst Build quality ever achieved imo. you need to remember the dreamcast was up against the ps1, yet 2 generations of machines later, it's graphics stand up to scrutiny today against the lates gen of console. it was also the first console to introduce full internet access and also the first console to have downloadable games for it's standalone memory unit/portable games machine, the Vm. AND in doing so, made the downloadable options available from a basic forerunner to Itunes.

All of todays consoles have something the dreamcast tried 11 years ago. internet? aye, downloads? aye, motion controls?, aye. it was a fabulous machine for its time let down by hideous reliability and crap support from developers. shame, it really could have been a sensation if the money grabbers had let it be. but alas, it's a bit forgotten about these days.

Here here!

Phantasy star online anyone? That was a forerunner to most of the current online communities. Whilst I only ever had dial up (and with games like Unrea/PSO high phone bills) Im sure there was an ADSL adaptor for posh folk who had broadband circa 2000.

My DC bit the dust many moons ago sadly, but I think you've just made my choice of next console for me!

Speaking of the VMU downloads, I remember getting a Matrix animation for it just after the hype of the first film! Simply awesome! (y)

Dream Cast had a seriously awesome game - Skies of Arcadia. This was later released on the Game Cube and then on the Wii (via DLC). If you haven't played this game, you really need to! It spanned like 6 discs and was a seriously awesome RPG game.

The DC was an awesome console but it just came to life a bit too early. I think if it had been released just as home broadband was kicking off (and of course with updated system specs) it would have been a huge hit.

I've had all the Nintendo consoles (was never a big Sega fan, aside from the DC) and I think the best one was the Game Cube. It represented what the Wii later became - a highly portable console that was aimed at multiplayer over single player. Even just thinking about it makes me want to start playing Time Splitters 2. :p

I needs to go get more Gamecube games. Mario Sunshine, for its faults, was awesome!

You BASTIDS!!!!!

You've just made an old man feel even older. To my generation retro gaming was building Airfix kits, Corgi, Dinky and Matchbox cars, Meccano, Scalextric, etc. My favourite toys were my battery operated robot(remote control via cable as Marconi was just experimenting with radio back then) and my battery operated Dalek that had bump and go(you couldn't block its way, it just turned and went off in another direction). I'd kill to have them now even though I have a big remote control dalek that speaks etc, it's not the same as your childhood stuff.

Feck, I've turned into James May!! If anyone calls me Captain Slow at the Glasgow meet, I'll bash 'em with me stick ;)

I built maybe 2 Airfix kits before I got frustrated and returned to playing Dizzy and Chase HQ on my Sinclair :D Toy cars though, still have over 350 in a box somewhere, many of which still have boxes :)

Going back to the Dreamcast, still have a promo video from that somewhere. Would quite like to get one of those as a retro console, wouodl just need to be a good one that's not been bashed about as so many tend to. I was fully hooked on the PS at that point though - had given up on Sega, which was kind of depressing as I loved and still do love playing the Mega Drive.

How did Sega go down the plughole when they were so up there at the forefront of gaming. (My personal theory is because they sponsored Williams. But hey, I'm biased).

Good question really. I think the PlayStation caught them by surprise and they relied too much on the loyalty of their owner base. Plus of course, many of the main title games like Sonic went kind of tits up when they went to the next gen.

The PS was a marginally better console than the Saturn and overall was marketed in a better way so it caught the consumer's attention more. It was the tech of the moment where as the bulky and less technically brilliant Saturn was left behind a little.

With the Dreamcast, I just think it was beaten by the Sony marketing machine. It was a good console from what I've heard, just not promoted in the best way. I also kind of felt that in the home market of Japan where the true console battle lies, Sega were in a losing battle against Sony and indeed Nintendo.

I think it's a real shame the way Sega ended up. They ended up being the Atari of the 2000s - ahead of their time but pummelled by better company organisation who knew how to develop and market their products.

Saying that though, I believe people still develop games for both the Dreamcast and the old Atari Jaguar due to the CD-Rom format being fairly open :)

iv got a snes and a panasonic q...thats a gamecube made by panasonic pretty awsom...a wii with homebrew channel ps2 linux model, and now the ps3

sony didnt realy steal the idea from nintendo they were working on a cd add on like the mega drive had but sony thought they would make a better profit from relasing it themselves

the panasonc could have worked better if they had made it at a sensible price scope :D

yeah the playstation was supposadly meant to be the snes cd but fell out with conflicting ideas if i remember so just decided to release it as a sony machine aka playstation

Ah retro win!

Sad, I know, but I just won this on ebay!

And speaking of the bay, anyone else notice postage charges seem to now be erradicated?

Related... http://www.cinemassacre.com/new/?p=3920 the Angry Video Game Nerd rules :D

And yeah, I've noticed many games and the like don't have postage charges BUT more often than not they'll recoup them from the winning price on the item. "Free Delivery" does look more appealing than a delivery charge after all or maybe I'm just being cynical :p

Sorry to bring up a 2 year old post but Sega rules :)

Although I preferred it when it was just called 'gaming' and not 'retro gaming' but I guess that is just me getting old.

Completed Sonic 3 with Martyn the other day, was a lot shorter than we remembered although the levels were pretty long. Not sure what to move onto next, kinda fancy completing all the sonics since I don't think I ever actually finished them legitimately as a kid, definitely never got all the chaos emeralds.
