Hi All,
Most of you will know its quite a common problem on the Cinquecento that the Cam cover Gasket can start to leak as the years tick by and replacement is a must to prevent the oil from seeping out, this will cost you around £5 from your local motor factors so its not to expensive to replace,
To be honest its not a big job to do,its even easy for a first timer taking on a little car DIY so why not give it a try!,
Its up to yourself how you do this?, but i will explain to you the way i do it,
First you are best to unbolt the 2 x 10mm bolts on the throttle cable bracket that's bolted to the side of the spi unit "single point injection" throttle body unit,you do this because the cable itself runs across the top of the cam cover, so can get in the way when refitting the cover,doing this gives you easy access when refitting the new gasket and cover so you get a good leak free fit!,
Then you need to remove the 4 x 10mm bolts holding the cam cover to the cylinder head,two are located on the rear of the cover and two at the front like below,
Then once you have removed the 4 bolts and lifted off the cover you should be left with the engine looking this below,
Now before fitting the new rubber gasket you need to clean and dry both mating surfaces!,this is very important so you get a good leak free seal,if you fail to do this, you may find after fitting the new gasket it will leak oil, so make sure you clean both surfaces before refitting,
Now what i do is also use some instant gasket sealer, as this helps seal the uneven surfaces and gives you a good seal,this will cost you about £5-10 which to be honest ain't that expensive to ensure you get a good seal!,
Now what i do is apply a little sealer to the cam cover itself like below,Why i hear you ask?,once you have applied the sealer to these areas it helps to keep the rubber gasket in place for when you go to turn it upside down for refitting, so the gasket itself stays in place giving you enough time to get the cover in its location ready to refit the bolts!,apart from that, it can only help seal it,
I also apply a little sealer to these areas on the head itself as this will also help give you a good seal once fitted,
Now once you have this done its just a case of fitting the cover to the head and tighten the 4 x 10mm bolts..........8Nm-6lbf/ft,if you do not have a torque ratchet to do this....... do not over tighten this bolts!, as theres no need for them to be over tightened as you could end up stripping the threads on the head itself!,
Now its just a case of refitting the 2 x 10mm bolts that you removed from the throttle cable bracket, then leave the instant gasket sealer to set!,how long does this take?, that depends on the type of sealer you have used so check your sealer directions,
