As some of you know I switched to steel wheels and winter tyres at the end of October as the GP was a nightmare for handling in the snow. Luckily this winter has been no where near as bad and February has been exceptionally mild making me wonder if now is the time to switch back to the alloys. The pro's and con's are as follows

For

Alloys look much better
Summer tyres work better above 7C and we're averaging 10C at the moment

Against

I don't worry about pot holes when I have the steelies on
I can get away with a filthy car when I have industrial looking wheels
I live in the NE of Scotland and winter may not be over for another month yet

So, if you were me would you change back to alloys or hold off for a few weeks yet?

ad hold off a week or two myself, supposed to be -1 here over night an the winter tyres would be a benefit. tbh ad use the clock changes as tyre changes unless the weather was drastically different.

phew, thought for a minute you were gona suggest selling up :ROFLMAO:

The overnight temps don't really bother me as the car is rarely used before mid morning atm which is why I'm swithering on this. However I also don't have any major journeys planned between now and the middle of March so it's not as if I'm going to to be burning rubber in a major way.

Yeah, I think you're right and I should hold off for a week or 2 and see what happens

Cheers Rich

Its suppose to dive again at the end of the week.

i'd have changed them back already :p

tbh though probably best to just leave it another week or so :)

tbf, it'll probably take me at least a week to organise getting them back from storage. Need brother-in-law and his forklift truck to get them down from the shelf they're stored on up at his yard. And getting hold of my brother-in-law is nigh on impossible at the moment :(

There's only been a wee bit of sleet up here and even that's gone now :(

Wheels are probably gonna be left until mid-March at least - which no doubt means I'll forget all about them and still be running on steelies in summer

Mind your winter tyres are like jelly when warmer and wil be wearing down as fast aswell.

It was last weeks warm weather and the thought of the tyres wearing quicker that started me wondering if now was the time to swap back. However the summer tyres are nearly twice as expensive as the winter ones so I'm not quite sure how relevant wear is. I'm more worried about road handling tbh and as I didn't notice any change between Thursday (15C) and today (4C) it's probably not going to help me make a decision either.

Most of the 500 lot on Ff are back on summers now. Have been for a couple weeks.

I was going to ask how far south they are but that's probably irrelevant taking into account last weeks temps and the fact that parts of northern England had snow today when we didn't :D

the mondeo has winter tyres on too, seriously, you'd be stunned how much tread they've used up on the fromnt especially in the past month even not doing much mileage

for that reason alone id say nows the time to switch back

I know all about refurbs, been told if I want mine refurbed then I will have to get them done in one colour!! :(

Black it is then!! :D

Anyway back on topic, I would personally change them!! ;)
:eek:fftopic: a bit here but.. Steve I saw an Orange GP Sporting eralier, Sporting alloys on, BLACK... looked good.
Anyway back on topic.
Seen as the weather's getting nicer, I'd say switch back to Alloys.

Probability forecast at work says no snow (30 day) for us up here. Also paint finish on steels is crap, paint em

lol, yeah, I know the paint finish is crap and the worrying thing is I've kinda gotten used to it now too. May paint them before they go back on next winter...

Is there a temperature forecast? Short-term says we're back into double figures by the end of this week and if that's going to continue then it's def time to change back

No probability forecast is for a snow event only, am back in work the night= no patrol. Forgot you put wheel trims on. Ill let you ken bout temps later (0100 start)

Wheel trims... yeah I remember them... they were on the car for a while...

Took them off at the end of last November as I needed to thoroughly make sure a nasty knocking noise wasn't something really obvious before the car went into the garage - word spreads quickly in a small town when you **** up  Unluckily for my bank account it was not loose wheel trims but a broken spring. The trims never got put back on as I got too busy (cough) lazy and they've been in the shed ever since.

Cheers for the weather forecast btw
