Just when I've finished shaking down my Fiorino pick up and putting right all the little niggles I have noticed a huge puddle of oil under it. Upon closer investigation it smells of gearbox oil and there is a big tear in the front nearside inner CV boot. Is the 1.7d engine/box the type where the CV boots hold in the gearbox oil?!

Is it an easy job to change this CV boot?

Surely someone has done this job before and can advise on how to do it? Also I am having problems sourcing a replcement boot, does anyone know the fiat part number and where I can obtain one from?

Hi
I had to do the cv joint boot a while ago, you need to undo the big driveshaft nut, then jack up the van and remove the wheel. Theres 2 sets of nuts and bolts holding the hub to the lower shock absorber undo them, the track rod end needs to be undone as well.
You might have to undo the brakes and caliper and tie it up, you might be alright.
At the gearbox end the driveshaft is held to the gearbox with 3 little nuts about 120 degrees apart. I used a real long extention to undo those.
Warning you need a bowl underneath the gearbox and driveshaft as when you pull the driveshaft out, the gearbox oil will flood out.
Now you should be able to push the driveshaft back towards the engine and through the hub hole and then just pull the driveshaft out. You will have to move the hub quite a bit to do this, maybe use a bit of force.
I got a reconditioned driveshaft so came with all new boots etc.
Then just reassemble and remember to top up the gearbox oil.
Garage quoted me 2 hours to do this job.
Please someone correct me if I have said anything wrong.

Jim:

According to the VIN you gave me, you need the following Fiat parts:

Boot: # 7625541 (2X, left and right),
Bearing: # 92601390 (2X)
Large clamp: # 13435708 (2X)
Small clamp: # 13434070 ( 2X)

I suggest doing both sides, the other one will go soon as well.....!

Maybe a part number will have changed, but the Fiat dealer will know.

Good luck, and post results if you will!

Fiorinoman - many thanks for taking the time to explain what you did, I'm not sure whether I feel brave enough to have a bash at it or take it to a garage!

Peter - thanks for the part numbers, I went to my local Fiat dealer and ordered them this morning, they should be with me on Thursday. You were spot on with all the part numbers except the bearings which have now been superceded by part number 71738383. Total cost for all the parts was £60.47 - ouch!

Thought I would follow up to this thread - I chickened out of doing the job myself as I'm already pretty unpopular with the neighbours as my road is full of oil patches from when it was leaking all over the place so I don't think they would be too impressed if I dumped a massive slick everywhere when dropping the driveshafts!

I took the truck to my local mechanic and he fitted all the parts and supplied new gear oil and turned the job around in a day for £125 - the part numbers you supplied were spot on Peter...

The mechanic also runs a MOT place and he said that a few customers commented on the truck wondering what the hell it was as they had never seen one before! :)
