Hi folks...

I am new here so.... PLEASE be gentle! :)

Right, I have just got into the warmth after kicking a fiat Fiorino, and dropping it off a cliff - well, that's what happened in my mind, but in reality...

The car wouldn't start. Suspected the little valve on the injector pump, but checked the wiring to it, and it seems okay. Also, it clicks as it should when the ignition is turned on...

Checked, and no/VER little diesel coming up to the injectors...
Now, there is some odd little 'reset' type switch inside the cab, passenger footwell on the left hand side.

My mate pressed this and held it, the heater relay clicked off/on, and then the car fired, started and seemed okay. Turning it off however, we could not replicate this, and it made me wonder if the wierd switch thingy is faulty, or if something further down the circuit from this (possibly something that it restets???) is faulty...

I just wondered if anyone has had similar things, or if its a common fault etc...

[Edit]: I have searched the forums, the 'wierd switch' is the accident fuel cut off switch. I am wondering if these are known to be faulty? - OR...

Are these engines known to suffer air locks???

Cheers in advance,

Mike

Well, it looks like if the switch you described is not working properly anymore.
What kind of engine and what year btw?
Did it run good before?

It ran before yes, no real problems...

It cut out, then we replaced a jubalee clip on the fuel intake to the injector pump, as the old one looked loose and rough.

Now, there is no diesel coming up.

I was wondering... the switch resets the cut off, but what triggers it? where is the sensor?

- its a P reg, and I think its a 1.9 diesel (i can check on this if needed, its not my vehicle, its my mates, but he doesn't have the internet, so I am trying to find info for him...)

Cheers,

Mike

Did you run the diesel down to nearly empty? I had a similar problem in which the van wouldn't start. I bridged the cut off switch by removing the terminals to it and putting a piece of wire across the terminals. In my case it had no effect and the van still wouldn't start. The tank has a small resevoir at the botton o f itand the gauge can read quarter full but there is very little in the tank.
Ther are two small pipes to the tank, one send and one return. I removed the send pipe at the tank end, and disconnected the fuel pipe at the unit where the accelerater cable is connected to ( engine bay). Put a hand type pump
Draper Tools FUEL TRANSFER SYPHON PUMP: Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools
or
Draper 18140 Syphon Pump-1.8 Metre Hose: Amazon.co.uk: Garden & Outdoors
and after about an hour of fiddling about and pursuading, removing and reattaching the fuel send pipe at the fuel control unit ( the unit where the accelerator is connected) it started. If it is an air lock in the fuel line that you have to push the air lock through the whole system including the fuel filter. You could try a new fuel filter as well before the faffing about with the air lock. Make sure the fuel filter is full.
It took me a couple of hours and two batteries to get it going but it worked fine after that, but now I never run on less than half a tank!

My fuel gauge is the same too!!
done the same when i replaced my fuel filter, deffo fill it with diesel first!! as it goes straight away.

I often run my fuel tank empty until the low fuel warning light comes on, and I never fill the fuel filter when putting a new one one, there's also no need to bleed the system, I just start the engine without any problems. and that's how it should be!
Btw, I own the car for 8 years now, and have driven about 180.000km with it (~112.500mls), I change the fuel filter every 15.000km (~9500mls), so I have put on 12 filters so far, without problems.

Well Pete i used to work for a Fiat dealer and every Fiorino was a bstard to get going after a new filter,so i learnt off the techs there, the other way was to hold the throttle open when it first fires.
Perhaps you have a miss build that works 100% perfect (y) but mines always been a bugger, but never misses a beat so 140,000 miles and still going does me. Regards

153.000 mls. on mine......!!
It's a bitch to remove and to put the new filter on, due to limited space, if I did fill the filter with diesel first, I'm sure a lot will be spilled before it's in place.....!!
Again, I just put the new, empty Fram filter on, start the engine, ( it'll run rough and smoke for about 30 seconds, I have to admit) and that's it.
