Hi everyone,
In last five days I experienced very weird problem

On warm engine, when coasting on neutral i.e. before traffic lights on some point when I press brake I can see arrows demanding downshift  (but the car is on NEUTRAL !!) rpm drop and sometimes engine stall.

Also when braking on neutral when speed pass through 10 mph RPM drops, engine stall, but it is only when brake pedal is pressed. When slowing down without brake pedal all is fine

:bang: wtf ?? HELP !!!

Suspect the 'brake light switch', these are known to cause all manor of strange and weird lights and messages..........they fail on the inside and pass erroneous messages to the cars computer systems..........mine told me gears were unavailable, false..........not expensive to change, but a bitch. Plus I would hate to send you off on the wrong track, could be something else. Worth looking on here and searching for Brake light switch, a fair number of us have had similar problems, all gone once switch changed..........Cheers Qube O. Should add, no fault codes were stored.............

a little update, problem also exist without braking, I just slow down on empty road without braking from 40 mph to 0 and on passing 25 mpg downshift arrow and rpm drop and the same on passing 10 mph. This little ****er think that gear is engaged...... any idea which sensor control that ?

I do this for 20 years and never had any issue in any car...until today :)

but, never mind, I have more clues - when coasting on neutral WITHOUT clutch then engine think that gear is engaged, with clutch pressed and on neutral all is normal.

so the question is, is here any sensor which detect clutch position ?

Don't coast in neutral its as simple as that
The ecu needs the car to be in gear at all time, it can't calculate parameters if your in neutral
and your moving.
Your just going to adjust your bad driving habit...... Very un normal way to drive

agree, it may be bad habit

but why I never seen anything like this before in this or in any other car ? For last twenty years I had 12 cars of which 7 was with manual gearbox plus another few on holiday or work rental cars, I always use this driving habit and NEVER seen anything similar.

I think that it must be some sensor which is telling the engine incorrectly that gear is engaged

ok, one more question, in your fiorino do you have press clutch to start the engine or it can start without clutch ?

That's right

Thank you, that will explain a lot !!! Now I know what the problem is, CLUTCH SENSOR !!!

My van can start without clutch pressed, so this is not right, and on google it was described as one of symptoms of clutch sensor fault.

Also, regardless of my driving technique , when engine is idling on neutral it should stay on the same RPM all the time and not stall without reason.

Probably not related, but I noticed the sensor for my gear can be triggered by gently moving the stick towards the gear without engaging it. So say if I was in neutral i could wiggle it to make it flash the gear up/down light.
I used to coast a lot, it could make sense in a petrol for economy, but in a diesel the engine cuts fuel when slowing down in gear and essentially the wheels are keeping the engine running. If you're going for economy then adjust your driving style to keep the engine engaged to slow down so the engine uses no fuel, as opposed to the fuel used for idle tick over.
