Hi Guys
Well it's happened!!!!!!
Timing chain snapped at low speed between gear changes
What can i expect to pay to get this sorted
1.3 multijet Diesel
Van is on a 08 plate and has done 105000 miles with full service history

Sorry to hear that :(

With a record of good oil you would have hoped it wouldve lasted much longer

I seem to recall the parts are @£200/£250

But no point doing anything else ..as itll do you another 100k+ .

Its an involved job though.. lots of bits to remove.. sadly nobody has posted a guide

Lets just hope that engine has been treated with respect, and not abused..........fingers crossed. Still have my oil changed every 5000 mile, good quality and hope it serves me well.......Cheers.

Hi
The engine will cost me £600 plus the labour so will end up cheaper than a chain fit and maybe rockers valves ect plus i will end up with an engine with half the mileage
Luigi

I think he meant get a new chain fitted to the new engine so you start knowing that it’s a new chain and unlikely to go the same way as the previous chain 6 months after the new engine is fitted

When I had a replacement engine in mine it was a condition of the warranty from the breaker that a new oil pump, timing chain and tensioner was installed prior to fitting. I also had the clutch changed at the same time whilst the engine was out and it needed a new rad as the old one was leaking.

Hi
I have an 18month WARRENTY and do not have to change anything, as I said it has genuine mileage and service history

That's a wast of labour charge plus its definitely going to have snapped rockers and or bent valves which means the head will need to be removed and checked
The engine has over a 100k.... So not worth spending on it
I will however remove the newish water pump and thermostat housing and the 2 year old fuel delivery pump, alternator and aircon pump and what ever else I can get off
I will also have a spare airbox as the new engine has one, these normally get broken by heavy handed mechanics and I replaced mine last year, so now I have a good spare
I may end up selling it all though

Perhaps it worth getting a new chain fitted before fitting the engine

Your fitting a knackered engine to replace your knackered engine?

As Andy said I mean fitting a new chain the the replacement engine before it's fitted

And warranty or not it’s still worth having a new timing chain fitted to the new engine, mainly because if it’s been sitting around a while and bumped about the yard the chain could have gotten a little rusty or taken a knock and In a years time should the chain on the new engine break, then you’ll be lucky to have the breakers/garage warranty a second hand chain on an old engine a year from now.

And the end of the day it’s your piece of mind that you’re not going to end up back In the same position as you are at the moment, especially when your earning are directly linked to having a working van

Hi
The engine was was warm when removed from a 500 that had a rear end shunt, at the end of the day no-one is going to replace a timing chain at such low mileage weather is out or not i'm not going to replace any thing and get it fitted as is

I agree if I were putting that engine in another 500 or some other car I’d probably not bother and that’s your choice at the end of the day.

I’m guessing in your van you are out and about all the time and with vans you either rack up miles quickly doing long distances 20,000 miles not being unheard of even on a little van or you do loads of stop starts short distances with the engine constantly heating up and then cooling down. Depending on the milage you cover you “could” easily find yourself with another snapped chain in 2-3 years
That’s obviously not a definite, my 1.3 mjt was on 120k miles when I got rid and carrying on running for sometime after that. But as a business vehicle, your not earning money if you don’t have transport and I have seen people post on here about chains breaking at less than 46k miles, that’s without having been in an accident then stood around in a scrapyard for a while.

You might not want to or intent to change your mind but it is a sensible suggestion that Chris3234 made
