I've had the flashing check glow plugs message for a few months now but the van seems to start/drive fine. One thing that puzzles me is when the van is started on a very cold morning ie the last couple of weeks the light doesn't flash. But if i stop the van when engine warmed up and restart it comes on again and will come on all the time during the day when restarting, but the next morning when very cold wont come on.

Mine did similar silly things..........left it as long as possible before I had them changed, got to the point it simply didn't want to start. Still all changed plus a new battery and now its great. Cheers Qube O.

the ancient art of Sho-ryu-ken :D No I mean the glow plug dash light - I've never seen it, even when -4 degrees etc, I expected to. First diesel I've had see, all Witchery to me! PS You seem very knowledgable, could I ask you about timing chain replacement, time, costs etc on a 13 plate 1.3 MJ? She's gonna go :( Rattling like a goodun. 136k ex fleet I've changed oil twice done 20k+ miles myself (in 6 months). I heard a quote I didn't like much, apparently due to the engine "having to come out". Thanks for your time

Its a relatively big job.. but should be possible in.situ

Plenty of people bought tidy vehicles with failed chains.. and fixed them in.situ

As you will know.. the engine is used in vauxhalls..so plenty of mechanics around to work on them

Location will see labour rates between £40 and £100 an hour ;)

Update

Just had 4 new glow plugs fitted £74.98:eek:

My local garage quoted 2 hrs labour £80+£35 for set of plugs +vat £138 total but said they weren't keen doing it in case they snapped, but recommended Thomas Fuel Injection Services

Thomas Fuel Injection Services Blyth Northumberland quoted me half hour labour £35 +£27.48 for set of plugs+vat £74.98
I was dubious and was expecting a phone call telling me it had taken 2 hrs removing old plugs. So it was a nice surprise that it only took them half hour to extract and fit,i don't know what make were fitted but for the price not really bothered.

Most glow plugs will come out easy providing that they were removing the original ones from new
The problems start with removing plugs are if someone else before has changed them and done them up to tight
Should not take any longer than an hour to do when I did mine which were made by BOSCH
Tech tip.. GET THE ENGINE WARM WD 40 around the plugs first, leave for a few mins, undo each plug a little and spray again with WD40 so that it penetrates right down the thread

WD 40 isnt a penetrant.. ;)

Wilko sell a good aerosol penetrant for @£1

Plusgas is great..but pricey

HOT.. thats definitely the best way..

And give yourself some time..
Rushing isnt recommended

I have been using WD40 since the early 70's
And it IS a penetrating oil

Re: Fiat QUBO Glow Plugs

I had the glow plug flashing light and the 'Check Glow Plugs' warning for about 4 weeks and eventually took it to my local indie.

He did the job over 2 days (because Day 1 was diagnose but by then too late for ordering as parts drops are reduced atm..) so Day 2 was fitting although I mentioned lubing them as it was sitting waiting. He did that, ran it hot, lubed again then did the biz - £240... using genuine plugs.
Starts and runs a lot better now. He said that #4 plug was dead so at the initial start up it was only running on 3 cylinders (it sounded that way, bit rough) until the pots got hot enough for ignition.
Oh well, all sorted now and no more warnings. Bit of a price difference compared to Rosco's charges.. £30 each plug and £120 fitting.
