I’ve started to get a rattle (like a machine gun) on anything other than very gentle acceleration, it only occurs between around 1300 to 2000 rpm. Things I’ve tried so far are injector cleaner followed by approximately 1,000 miles of mainly motorway journey (no better), then a new air filter (old one was filthy) and new fuel filter but it hasn’t improved things. I’ve tried disconnecting the MAF but that seemed to make things worse.

The rattle dies down as soon as the van hits 2000 rpm and there’s no loss of power. I’ve also noticed that sometimes when stationary it won’t rev over 3000 rpm then other times it will.

Has anybody got any other suggestions of things I can check before I book it in to get checked over by a garage?

I was wondering about that, but I’ve had timing chain rattle on one of these engines previously (in a Vauxhall Combo) and it doesn’t sound like the same noise. Also it’s wierd that sometimes (usually when cold) it won’t rev over 3000 rpm, but when it’s warmed up it will (unless there’s some sort of protection in the ecu to prevent over reving).

I might try and get a video of the noise later and put it on You Tube with a link so you can hear it.

I tried to do a video of what it sounded like when driving with a microphone under the bonnet but for some reason it didn’t record the sound from the external mic so that ended up being deleted but I did get one of how it sounds at idle. I lifted the air box off to check the injector seals weren’t leaking but it’s all dry in there. One thing I did notice that I forgot to mention on my original post was that the breather pipe into the air intake box had come off and there was a bit of oily gunk on the rubber mat thing that sits under the intake box (that’s now been binned) and on the common rail that had obviously been blown out of the breather pipe.

I’ve given up on trying to diagnose the issue myself and have booked it in at a local garage tomorrow. I’ll update this thread with the outcome.

Sounds ok to me

It’s hard to hear the noise at tickover but even ticking over it is definitely noisier than it should be. Our 1.3 Multijet Doblo is much quieter in comparison. I’m inclined to think it’s a fuel injector problem, no doubt the garage will do a leak off test to determine if an injector is at fault.

A bit of a non update really. Local garage think it’s a fuel injector problem and have suggested I get a diesel specialist to look at it as they will be better equipped to diagnose and repair it. They put me on to a local diesel specialist who’s going to collect it but they are so busy it’s likely to be Tuesday before they can look at it ?

Finally had word back, it seems three out of four injectors are overfueling. Garage say it’s odd for three to fail at the same time and is normally caused by misfuling but I know for sure I haven’t put petrol in by mistake. Anyway the upshot is it looks like I’ll be having all four injectors replaced, given the mileage I do it’s worth spending the extra replacing the fourth one at the same time rather than having that one fail in a few months.

Hopefully this will be my last comment on this thread. Picked up my Fiorino this afternoon. Four brand new Bosch injectors appear to have solved the issue and I also had a new aux belt fitted as I believe they are supposed to be replaced at 100,000 miles and Sod’s law is if I left it it would let go when I’m a couple of hundred miles from home.

Hi gromit.

I’ve just checked the invoice, the individual price for an injector was £195.00 + VAT. I would guess the garage got them at trade price so retail price may be more.

The entire job came to a whopping £1,126.80 inc VAT. Looking at the invoice it seems they had too “clean and recut the injector seats using a special tool”. I also had the aux belt changed too. I did 450 miles in it on Friday and the rattle has definitely gone.
