Hi My 2012 14500 miles Fiat Fiorino has a issue with the the stop start. I drive up to a mile or two then the warning triangle comes on and it says "stop start not available" this happens even if I switch it off before I set off. It has only worked once when I had a long trip into Yorkshire about 180 miles at the end of January. I live in the countryside so the minimum mileage I might do on a trip is 15 miles at a average 55-60 mph. I had the battery replaced at the beginning of January when this fault occurred. My local garage (non Fiat) when it went for the engine temperature sensor replacing can not find any fault. I am loathed to take it to a Fiat garage because it is a 60 mile round trip and they might not be able to find the cause. It is frustrating when this happens because I only have the time on the instrument display and not the mileage. My engine is the 1.3 multijet diesel 95bhp. I am finding that some parts for this engine are only available from Fiat ie the engine temperature sensor cost £202.50 plus fitting. If it had been the 75bhp engine the garage could have got one for £40!! Anyway can any one help with the stop start issue?

Hi skamperman,

Mines a 2009 75hp, so its to old for stop start I'm pleased to say.

As I understand its workings the condition of the battery is a absolute......so even though you replaced it in Jan, with shortish runs, perhaps with lights/heater blower/radio whatever on, its failing to accumulate sufficient charge for the stop/start system to work.

They are very dependent on electrical power.............

So may be worth looking at this possibility before a Dealer visit......;

Cheers Qube O.

hi, :)
so the fault was there before the battery swap, and you've got another stop-start battery..fault still showing..??.

ideally you want to get plugged in to a laptop and read the codes,
there are some weird pre-conditions,

mine was poor on my punto, mentioned it at service time,
there was 1340 faults recorded..!!

all from starting without plugging in the seatbelt.. cleared the faults then worked perfectly(y)

progress eh..!!

worth just removing the negative battery lead for a couple of hours though.., that apparently can help on the panda's;)

It has been plugged in to a diagnostic machine when the air temperature sensor was replaced, no fault found with the stop start

I removed the earth lead for 2 hours as suggested. Still the Stop Start switched off after about 2 miles. I have been in contact with my local garage, they tell me they are in the process of installing a new diagnostic system which will operate same as the main dealers diagnostic systems. So when I go for my MOT and full service next month they should be able to tell me what's wrong. Unless anyone out in Fiat land has any ideas.

can you please clarify, what's happening..??:)

Does the "S/S unavailable" message come on after 2 miles,?

or the engine just fails to cut-off at junctions after 2 miles..??

2 totally different issues;)

The stop start becomes unavailable warning on the dashboard comes up after 1.5 - 2 miles then stays on. This happens even you switch the stop start off on the dashboard prior to setting off.

OK, so somewhere in the system there is a fault..

it's so complex..that other than cleaning, and tightening the battery terminal connections,

you are better interrogating the ECU,

quite where are you located ? - in the wilds I know..

several members up your way have MES..so could assist in getting a reading or two

I have found out that when the "stop start not available" warning comes up I have found out how to cancel it. You can cancel it by pressing the menu button, then the warning goes out and just leaves the yellow warning triangle on the dashboard. As I understand at the MOT they should be no warning lights on the dashboard so I will have to get it sorted out.

As far as I aware you are semi correct ref warning lights for a mot, however as stop start is not a safety system, it is not a failure point to have that particular warning light on. ( unlike most others like ABS, TRACTION, Etc.)

Phone you local mot station and they will confirm / deny?

Just looked on government mot testing site:

As well as electronic parking brake and electronic stability control warning lights (where fitted) the MOT test will also include checks for the correct function of the following, where fitted;

Headlight main beam warning light
Electronic power steering warning light
Brake fluid level warning light
Seat belt pre-tensioner warning light

So stop start light is NOT a failure point.

Been in to local garage for service and MOT, but guess what still can not solve the stop start issue not available. So I have bit the bullet and it is now booked into the Fiat Garage in Dumfries next Thursday. I hope they can solve it.

Has the vehicle ever been jump started do you know ? The ibs is very easily damaged from that , this unit monitors both charge going in and out of the battery , other things that come in to it are , battery temp , engine temp, hvac demand , gear position , seat belts , brake switch , fuel level , clutch switch , brake servo vacuum and a few more besides

Well the problem has been found. It is connector on the battery that has been broken then glued back on. So they have ordered a new part, this will get done on Monday. So hopefully this will be the end of the matter, except I will be going back to my garage to see what they have to say because they changed the battery and since then I have had this issue.
