Tipo The new FIAT Tipo wins the prestigious "AUTOBEST 2016" award

  • The new FIAT model receives Autobest's most coveted prize. The model was voted by an international jury panel of 26 motoring journalists from 26 different European countries.
  • With a total of 1492 points, FIAT Tipo overtook the other four finalists: the new Opel Astra, the new Hyundai Tucson, the Honda CRV and the Mazda CX-3.
  • Particularly appreciated was the car's value for money, which is a key concept in the strategy of the FIAT functional family.
  • FIAT is the only brand to have won the prestigious title no fewer than three times: in 2003 with Panda, in 2008 with Linea and today with the new FIAT Tipo.

The international jury panel of Autobest – an independent organisation created in 2001 – voted FIAT Tipo "Autobest 2016". The accomplishment reasserts the model's vocation as a functional car which maximises value for money, this being a crucial concept in the FIAT functional family. The car is packed with what customers genuinely appreciate, with a simple range and a transparent commercial offer.

A jury of 26 motoring journalists representing 26 European countries and covering 91% of the continent's total population awarded 1492points to the car for thirteen different parameters, including design, comfort, running cost-effectiveness, driveability, price, service network, spare parts distribution, versatility and buy-back value. In brief, a car must be the best buy for most European customers in order to win.

This year, the new FIAT Tipo came first ahead of the other four finalists: the new Opel Astra, the new Hyundai Tucson, the Honda CRV and the Mazda CX-3. For the jury, FIAT Tipo is an outstanding product with all the ingredients needed to satisfy an average customer of Europe: design, engines, perceived quality, comfort, versatility and excellent price-to-quality ratio.

With the new Tipo's extraordinary accomplishment, no fewer than three FIAT models have won the coveted accolade, a record among the brands assessed by Autobest: the first was Panda (2003) and the second was Linea (2008). The award ceremony will take place next February in Milan. This will be the first gala after the jury was expanded to include eleven new members representing Austria, Belgium, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the UK.

Sales kicked off very successfully this month in Italy – remarkably, over one thousand contracts were sealed during the first dealership weekend event. FIAT Tipo will be launched in other countries by next spring in a total of 40 markets across the EMEA region.

It will be available at launch, in the UK, in hatchback and estate versions. A saloon version has not yet been confirmed for the UK.

“I am very much looking forward to the introduction of this excellent C-segment model next year,” says Sebastiano Fedrigo, head of brand, FIAT UK. “Beautifully styled and built to the highest standards, the car will bring a new dimension to FIAT’s model line-up and will, I am sure, attract a lot of interest from our customer in the UK.”

In detail, the new car combines a large load capacity (520 litres) with compact overall dimensions (it is 4.54 metres long, 1.79 metres wide and 1.49 metres high). The 2.64 metre wheelbase emphasises its excellent internal comfort. All this is enhanced by Italian design, inside and out, which makes the car unique in its segment.

The new car fits a reliable suspension layout for very accurate driving, brilliant road-holding and outstanding passenger comfort: independent wheels McPherson on the front axle and interconnected wheels torque beam on the rear. The two layouts are optimised to reduce weight and contribute in this way to improving the car's fuel-efficiency.

In true FIAT style, the new Tipo is packed with plenty of clever solutions that make life better for everyone on-board. Like the remarkably rich standard equipment and the availability of the Uconnect TM system with a 5" colour touchscreen display, hands-free Bluetooth system, audio streaming, text reader and voice recognition, AUX and USB ports with iPod integration, controls on the steering wheel and, on demand, rear parking camera and the new TomTom 3D Touch navigation system.

The car's name – Tipo – sported on the badge is a celebrated designation that FIAT has used many times during its over one century of history. One of the models to carry the coveted name was the car of which nearly two million were made from 1988 to 1995 and which was awarded "Car of the Year 1989" also because of its versatile use, large interior space and compact exterior dimensions. The same winning features are found on the new Tipo, a practical, functional model which in perfect FIAT tradition ensures the best equipment-to-price ratio, this being the real value of any industrial product.

The new FIAT Tipo was designed in Italy by Centro Stile FIAT, developed in Turkey together with Tofaş R&D, which is one of FCA's largest research and development centres, and made in the Tofaşplant in Bursa –one of the world's best automotive factories which has received a World Class Manufacturing Gold Medal.

I'll just leave this here..

Spec for spec it costs exactly the same as a hatch...and due to better Aero is better on fuel and has a bigger boot.

Yet somehow the hatch back is the volume seller..

If anything the story of the whole car is how you can spend a hill of money engineering a car to be equal to or better than the best available, equip it more generously, style it well charge 20% less than the opposition and still be ignored..

Maybe fiat has the right idea, engineering and building it cheaply at least they won't lose money, although it may back fire in less badge concerned markets (where the 3 does a lot better).

Aye! Marea. What a handsome little motor that was.. :)

On the other hand Fiat buggered it by pitching it price-wise against the Mondeo and the last Cavalier/early Vectras.

Hopefully more manufacturers will get a boner for saloons.. We, the public, actually would buy some.. :D

I actually thought the Tempra was a better car,
both in looks and drive..,
however it's a larger FIAT - something that has NEVER sold well in the UK.

drool or vomit.. you decide;

I think FIAT have really hit the nail on the head with the new Tipo.

Good looking, great value, practical, spacious and sensibly equipped; that ticks a lot of boxes for a lot of people, myself included.

There are quite a number of reviews online now for the forthcoming hatch and estate, mostly positive. My feeling is that expectations for this new 'budget' C segment car were pretty low, but that the Tipo has actually surprised a lot of people.

One or two of the more pretentious reviews (that look like they're destined to be re-printed in some poncy Sunday supplements) make the odd snide comment about interior plastics not being up to Audi standards  but in reality there seems to be little of any real substance for them to criticise.

I like my current 500L, but as my first diesel and first MPV think that maybe it was a step too far for me after my previous car, a much loved Alfa 156 Sportwagon. I can definitely see me purchasing a 1.4 T Jet Tipo estate when they come to the UK, as it would bridge the gap nicely (and I'm not one for going round stroking bloody dashboards anyway ;))

Well, it's been a very long time (about eight years) since I last posted on FF, but I saw a video of the new Tipo on YouTube and thought it was an intriguing prospect. Not a bad looking car and pitched unashamedly cheap, which is a refreshing change. Can it tempt me back into the fold for FIAT No 5? Shame we have to wait until September!

Good value, and decent looking.

Shame the colour range is incredibly dull. They have stolen Toyota's colour pallet's.

I quite agree about the colours, I had a nose on the Fiat UK configurator and they are very uninspiring!

I'm not in the market for one, but to be honest I'd probably just go for the entry level 1.4 Easy in white as it would have all the equipment I need. Don't think I'd be prepared to pay for any of the metallic colours; the metallic red shade looks alright-ish on the configurator, but would depend on how it looked in the flesh.

Tipo arrived in my Fiat dealer's this week (Donnellys Belfast). Mid spec model in white -very nice and rear end treatment is excellent. Fit and finish looked to be high standard.
Only problem was no fanfare; the car just stood in the showroom along with other models. There were no leaflets and no sign outside announcing a new model. A pity because at that rate it will suffer the same sales fate as the Stilo and Bravo before it.

I've had an email from the dealer i used for servicing on my Alfa in the West Midlands, saying there's a launch weekend event on 3-4 September for the Tipo and 10-11 September for the 124 Spider. I'm assuming other dealers will be doing the same, so perhaps there'll be more in the way of baloons and bunting then?

I've seen the Spider advertised on TV, saying 'launching 10th September' or something to that effect, so I'm guessing they're using that car as the tool to get people in the dealerships and hoping that'll create a knock-on effect for other models. I guess the Spider would pull more traffic into dealers than the Tipo, just because Fiat's reputation for coupe/convertibles tends to be better than for family hatches.

And they need to save some of that marketting budget for the imminent Maserati Levante and Alfa Giulia!

Value for money eh. I dont suppose they have factored depreciation into that one then, my Bravo seems to have lost £8000 in 22 months. or £13000 in 41 months. You work it ourt, its to painful for me to do it. I don't think the Tipo will be any better. Do please think VERY carefully before buying one of these anywhere near new!!!!

If you're referring to your Bravos trade in value, then it's going to be awful, chances are you'll get a shocking p/x whatever car you're getting rid of!

Gulp. I've just ordered one. An Easy Plus with the smaller diesel engine, in black.

I was thoroughly disappointed with my 500L twin-air (well, I was disappointed with the economy of the twin-air) and I was just about to jump ship to Skoda when I was invited to go see the Tipo. (Some of you may have spotted me raging against the 500L machine on that forum, over the time I'd had it.......)

I was sold when I looked at the rear leg room. I use my cars for casual chauffeuring duties for a Mayor and although the 500L had excellent rear leg room, it never quite looked the part. To my eyes, the Tipo is a fine looking car and the rear legroom again is superb for the class. Yeah, I could have bought a Mondeo, or a Superb or similar, but I like to be a bit different. I've chuaffeured in both styles of Multiplas, the 500L and now the Tipo when it comes.

I'm looking forward to seeing the other chauffeurs faces when I turn up in a Fiat yet again. But for once, a good looking one!

It's due to be delivered by the end of the month and I'll let you know how I get on. I'll try to be a bit more, how can I say.....open minded....., about the Tipo.
