just had an oil and filter change (needed it),i bought and used 4L Castrol gtx part synthetic 10w 40 and just a normal filter.My mate did it at his works and said he put full 4l in and could do with another litre as it holds 4.5-5l with filter.

When i put the new engine in (bear in mind it was bone dry and clean)i put full 5l of oil in but rememebr some saying 5 was too much and 4 was fine?

Will i be rite with 4l of oil in?

Makes more sense to put 4L in, run engine for a minute to fill oil filters etc let it settle into the sump for 5 mins then use the dipstick to get it to the correct level?

If you see a bandwagon, its already too late!

as Buzz says, Usethe dipstick, too much oil can make the motor run too hot. Level should be between Min and Max

tried checking it once i got back but tbh i didnt leave it to settle and the dipstick is a nightmare especially with clean oil in that you can just about see lol

ill check it tomorrow after its been warmed up see what resading i get.
i got the stats before and says 4.8 with filter and 4.5 w/o filter.

went out in it today so left it 15 mins when i got back..checked it and i could see a blob on the dipstick,so bought another litre and put half of it in.even tho the stats are 4.8 with filter,the dipstick seemed covered.so left it at that

I never really trust manuals with oil capacities. My vectra 3.0 V6 manual stated 4.8 litres and took nearly 6 to fill to the max line. My sisters 1.6 pug said something like 4.5 and was full after less than 4. My Passat was always less than stated but i cant remember exact figures, but was at least a half litre less, and i do drain them thoroughly... The Vectra was the furthest out though, and that oil was really quite expensive...
