Are there any signs that your MAF sensor is in need of some attention?

My cars performance is, shall we say, varied. Sometimes its shockingly quick, other times it feels like it wouldn't overtake a bicycle.

I have had no breakdowns, no major faults and no engine management light or anything. Just wondered if this could be something to do with my problem?

First what engine, you may not have a MAF.
The MAF failure is registered with hesitation when accelerating at 3000rpm diesel, 4000rpm petrol engines and if its shot then the car wont go over mentioned rpms.

sorry, i drive a 1.8 bravo.

the problem i noticed is sometimes it picks up really well, and then other times it really does take the p*ss trying to get it going.

any advice appreciated.

im sure the signs of a faulty maf is to unplug it then run with it disconnected. It will rev higher and if it runs spot on then you know its down to the maf

allright mate, got ur text but have no cred.

im going to give it a try unplugging it and going for a drive tomorrow ad see what the results are.

apart from that its got me stumped and i'll just have to live with it for the time being.

thanks again

hey chap,

my 2.4jtd ran like a dog after unplugging the maf as the car went into limp mode due to the sensor not being attached.

with the maf on it would rev to 3.2k then hesitate, then pick up a bit until about 4.5k and that was it.

Bought a new maf and it pulls from 1.7k all the way round to 5.5k easily without any hesitation.
I guess petrol is the same but at different points in the rev range.

Darren im not givin faulse pointers, its what ive heard on here from a few ppl.

Jord,i have a maf from a 20v spare, unsure if itll fit or if its same pin connector. If it does fit,you can have it.

nice one mate thanks, but from the sounds of it it may not be that whats at fault.

its really hard to describe, but i'll try and explain my problem.

if im in first or second, in low revs, then put my foot down the car bogs down, and then picks up extremely slowly all the way to red line. But if im just a little bit higher up in the revs (around 2000 - 2500) i can put my foot down and it will put you in your seat and fly through the revs much quicker, and in turn go through the gears much quicker.

ive considered it being down to torque and therefore the clutch, but its not that. I've also considered it being the mixture of fuel/air being why its doing what it does, but im reasonably sure its not that either.

i know of a private strip of road which my friend owns, so ive tried standing starts, and the same problem occurs...

if i start at lower revs and try and set off quickly the car simlpy doesn't shift and even feels like its going through the gears slower. However if i rev it quite high and then set off it picks up much better all the way through the rev range and through the gears.

obviously i know the car will pick up quicker from a standing start if the revs are higher, but seriously, it will not go if i try and accelerate from low revs. it feels like ive jumped out of my 1.8 and into a 1.0 corsa!

ive also noticed that the car is quite touchy when im letting off and putting on the accelerator when going slowly. It seems to jump and then disapears when i accelerate more.

Hey Mike,

wasn't putting your comment down, I know some cars react differently to the MAF being disconnected, my friends alfa flew without it attached, but mine didn't.

On my search for a MAF a while ago I found that most fiat/alfa/lancia MAF's are the same and the difference is the width of the pipes they sit in.
I bought an alfa 156 petrol MAF for my 2.4JTD and just made the pipe fit, all ok :)

If you know anyone with a fiat/alfa where they don't mind you using their maf for a trial, go for it, see if it helps

Darren

Hi Darren no probe mate.

I remember reading that link :)

Jord it does sound like the is playing up.mine is a 4 pin,if you want it text or email me your address and I'll send it up for ya :) got nought to lose really,if the pipe is too fat just take the actual sensor out and swap it with you'd.

nice one thanks for the advice guys.

ant i think my problem is very similar to yours. except mine doesn't struggle to get up the revs above 3.5k, it just goes through them quite slowly.

mike il drop u a text in a short while mate nice 1.
