Steering wheel nut?

I tried to remove the steering wheel of my Bravo (1.6, -00). But the nut of the wheel was strange to me. It looks like the there is some kind of lock ring or something around the nut.

Photos from the wheel:

Should this "lock ring" to be removed or is it just part of the nut?

was the airbag easy to remove?

Maybe you want to do a Guide, as I know a few of us will want to take their wheel off at some point to straighten it up or to swap it for a leather one.

i know I would if you could do a guide mate or talk us through it

Just a 21mm socket if my memory is correct.

Before you do remove it and the AIR bag, note that the AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT will be shown on the drivers console if you remove it and the only way to get rid is one of two options,

Diable the buld (stick a 15mm long piece of wire over the back)
or
Diagnostics reset £25-£30

even if you disconnect the battery? How dioes it know it's been disconnected then??

It's easy, I recently done mine and have done 4 others, if you have disconnected the battery and left it for half and hour, you can use a 2 amp fuse and some wire to stop the airbag light coming on? What wheel are you changing it for, I have a 320mm square bottom wheel with momo horn push and momo boss on my marea weekend and it feels so much better.

The nut you are refering too has to nuts in that casing, I think it was a 22mm socket to get it off.

Fiat Marea Weekend 2.0 20v HLX 147 83k and so far so good!

sorry to butt in :)

if the airbag light is on,that means the airbag aint connected and wont work?
So,if i took it to fiat and got it 'reset' would that make the airbag work again or would it just take the light out?

reason i ask,i would like my airbag working in the future :)

Cheers,
Mike

A Fiat Marea in a Bravo Shell :)
Car Status: 23/02/10 - Heating and correct Oil amount sorted :)ready for MOT

Mike, the light on constantly means that it there is a fault code on the ECU if you still have the AIR BAG fitted the a reset will sort it. If you remove the AIR BAG and wheel for a sports one the light will always be there unless you disable it yourself.

The nut is 24mm do not remove the cage use a 24mm six sided socket. If you have to grind the end of the socket down for more grip.

When doing anything with the airbag disconect the battey leave it at least an hour to fully discharge the airbag ECU. I also turn the key after disconnecting the battery to help further discharge anything.

Streering Nut

I removed my steering wheel last week and found same problem, but all it is is a casing and a larger socket will do the job.

Karl- I presume its still in,well i hope so lol i have the marea wheel so i presume its been on since the swap over? (*if thats when the light comes on when the wheel gets taken off*) The ecu/control unit is all there as ive seen it when i put in the c/c.
